'Cats take down Bears 6-1 in first Big Sky match

OGDEN - Weber State men's tennis started Big Sky play with a 6-1 win over Northern Colorado Sunday morning.

Weber State started the day off by claiming the doubles point with wins in all three spots.To start the WIldcats off, Hou-En Chen and Cezary Walkusz defeated Connor Finerty and Augstin Lombardi 6-3 in the No. 3 spot. Freshman WIldcat duo, Kris van Wyk and Michiel Van Schoor defeated Kyle Pease and Cassell King 6-3 in the No. 2 spot.

For the doubles sweep, the No. 1 doubles match went into a tie breaker but Shao-Po Yin and Stefan Cooper defeated Alex Vakouftsis and Hayden Cramer 7-6.

Weber State had the doubles point advantage going into singles play.

Yin started singles play off with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Finerty in the No. 1 spot. Yin's victory was quickly followed by another WSU in the No.4 spot where Chen defeated Cramer 7-5, 6-3.

Weber State was up 3-0 and needed only one more victory to clinch the match but the remaining matches to finsih all went into either third sets or tie breakers.

The No. 2 match was the next to finish and Cooper defeated Pease 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 to solidify the Weber State win.

To finish things off, Van Schoor defeated Lombardi 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot and Walkusz defeated King 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.

The final match to finsih was the No. 3 spot where van Wyk fell to Vakouftsis in a very close match with scores of 6-3, 6-7 (11-9).

Weber State is now 4-4 overall on the season and 1-0 in Big Sky play. Weber State will take on Santa Clara, Friday March 3 in Ogden. Following spring break the Wildcats will host a pair of conference matches against Eastern Washington and Idaho.
