Weber State Volleyball opened up it's season against Arizona State at the Sun Devil Classic. The Wildcats fell in three sets with scores of 18-25, 18-25 and 19-25.

"Arizona State was a good volleyball team and forced us to make plays, which we didn't," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "I was extremely disappointed in our effort and our competitive attitude. We need to find some heart in our volleyball team in order to reach our potential."

Weber State and Arizona State started the match off staying close in score and being tied up at 7-7 early in the first set. The Sun Devils were able to string together two and three point runs that the Wildcats couldn't match. Arizona State pulled ahead for the 25-18 first set win.

Arizona State got a 7-2 jump on Weber State to start the second set. Later in the second set the Wildcats went on a 7-2 run including big kills from Amanda Varley and Aubrey Saunders and a big block by Saunders and Megan Gneiting. It wasn't enough to close the score gap and ASU claimed the second set 25-18 giving them the 2-0 overall lead going into the break.

Early in the third set ASU had a 5-0 run. To take away some of the Sun Devils momentum, Weber State came up with two back to back kills by Saunders and Andrea Hale.  Later the Wildcats brought the score within three with help from Sun Devil errors and four consecutive kills by Varley. The Sun Devils had a 23-15 lead heading towards a victory but the Wildcats held it off going on a 4-1 run before an ASU kill finished the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.

Weber State was led by Varley who finished the match with 14 kills off 44 attacks with only three errors for a .250 percentage. Hale also put up a solid performance with eight kills off of 30 attacks with only two errors for a .200 percentage. Ashlyn Power was another offensive standout in her collegiate debut with a double double with 31 assists and 10 digs for WSU.

Defensively, Hannah Hill-DeYoung came up with four blocks and Hale recorded three. Thamires Cavalcanti also put up double digit digs for WSU with 14.

The Wildcats finished the match with 33 kills from 115 attacks and 14 errors for a .165 percentage. ASU had 52 kills from 123 attacks with 15 errors for a .301  percentage. Both teams had seven team blocks and ASU out dug Weber State 63-43.

Weber State will remain in Tempe, Ariz. for two more matches Saturday, Aug. 26 against Boise State and North Dakota State.
