Weber State falls in three sets to CSUN

Weber State women's volleyball took on California State University Northridge tonight in the opening round of the CSUN/Pepperdine Challenge and fell in three sets.
Early in the first set the Wildcats stayed close to the Matadors only trailing by one point 7-6. CSUN then went on a 5-0 run that was finally ended by a block by Hannah Hill.
Weber State gained a little momentum back in the first set going on a 8-2 run and bringing the score within two points and continued to fight back as they brought the score to 19-20 coming into the final plays of the set. Kills by Katelyn Erwin, Amanda Varley and a CSUN error helped tie things all up at 25-25.
The Matadors pulled out a 27-25 first set victory thanks to the help of a kill and Wildcat error.
CSUN got an early 5-1 jump on the Wildcats in the second set. A gap that Weber State couldn't catch as WSU fell 25-15 in the second set giving the Matadors the 2-0 overall match lead going into the break.
Weber State couldn't find any footing in the third set as CSUN got a 9-0 start and pushed through for a 25-11 third set victory and the overall 3-0 match win.
The Wildcats were led by Andrea Hale who had eight kills from 30 attacks for a .167 percentage. Aubrey Saunders had an impressive .571 percentage with four kills from seven attacks and no errors. Bailey Irwin had 148 assists to help out the offensive efforts.
Irwin also had the match high of nine digs for a strong defensive effort. Thamires Cavalcanti was close behind with her seven digs on the match. Hannah Hill was another asset on the net as she recorded four blocks on the night with two solos.
Weber State had 26 kills from 103 attacks and 15 errors for a .107 percentage to CSUN's 45 kills from 96 attacks and 15 errors for a .312 percentage. The Matadors out dug the Wildcats 50-30. Weber State had eight team blocks to CSUN's four.
Weber State will remain in Northridge, Calif. to take on Northeastern Friday, Sept. 1 at 5:00 MT. The Wildcats are now 0-4 overall on the season.
