WSU picks up first win in five sets over Northeastern

Weber State volleyball picked up their first victory of the season by taking down Northeastern in five sets in the second round of the CSUN-Pepperdine Challenge. 
"It's nice to get the first win under our belt, and tonight was the first time we have gotten a consistent effort," head coach Jeremiah Larsen said. "This is a good night to build on as we prepare ourselves for our conference season."
The Huskies got an early 5-0 run in over the Wildcats giving Northeastern a 9-4 lead. The Wildcats didn't give up and kept chipping away at the score. Weber State pulled together a 6-2 run and tied things all up at 21-21.
A kill by Amanda Varley gave the Wildcats a 22-21 lead for the first time in the match. Despite strong Wildcat efforts Northeastern pulled out a 4-1 run to end the first set 25-23.
Northeastern controlled the momentum early in the second set taking a 12-1 lead. The Huskies pushed their lead to 19-9 before WSU found it's groove. Weber State went on a 5-0 run cutting the score deficit in half.
A Huskie block ended the WIldcats run but it didn't set them back as Weber State went on a 7-0 run to take a 22-20 lead heading into the final plays of the set.
The Wildcats finalized the second set win with a kill by Aubrey Saunders. The two teams were tied at one set a piece going into the break.
The third set started off close between the two teams with a tie score at 8-8. Weber State went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead over Northeastern. The Wildcats maintained at least a four point lead for the rest of the third set and came out with a 25-20 third set win giving them a 2-1 lead over Northeastern in the match.
The fourth game started out close again with an 8-7 score in favor of Northeastern. The Huskies went on a 5-0 run giving them the momentum. A kill by Hannah Hill ended Northeastern's hot streak and gave Weber State some footing to go on a 6-0 run tying things up at 14-14. Northeastern pushed to the finish and came out with a 25-19 win to tie the match all up at two sets a piece.
Halfway through the fifth set, the Huskies had an 8-5 lead. Then pushed the lead to 10-6 when the Wildcats called a timeout. Coming out of the timeout Weber State scored four unanswered points to tie things up at 10-10.
Weber State then took a 13-11 lead but Northeastern tied it back up at 13-13. A big kill by Andrea Hale and a second by Amanda Varley drove the fifth set win and overall match victory home for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats were led by Varley who had a double double on the night with 19 kills from 60 attacks with only nine errors for a .167 percentage and 10 digs. Hale also had double digit kills with 11 on the night. Ashlyn Power helped the offensive efforts of the Wildcats with 33 assists.
Defensively, Thamires Cavalcanti had 23 digs and Jesse Hover added 15. Saunders was a force on the nets as she came up with six blocks including two solos.
Weber State had 49 kills from 181 attacks and 23 for a .144 percentage while Northeastern had 66 kills from 194 attacks with 36 errors for a .155 percentage. The Wildcats had 86 digs to the Huskies 95. WSU had 15 team blocks to Northeastern's nine.
Weber State is now 1-4 on the season and will take on Pepperdine, Saturday, Sept. 2 at 1:00 p.m.
