9/2/2017 3:18:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Weber State volleyball finished out the CSUN-Pepperdine challenge falling to Pepperdine in three sets. Senior, Thamires Cavalcanti came away from the weekend breaking into the 1,000 dig club, with a new total of 1,025 in her career.

With her performance of 34 kills from 121 attacks for a .140 percentage over the course of the weekend, Amanda Varley was named to the All-Tournament team. Varley averaged 3.09 kills per set and also recorded 25 digs in the three games averaging 2.27 per set.

Against Pepperdine, Weber State had a slow start in the first two sets falling 25-14 and 25-15  giving the Waves the two set advantage going into the break.

In the third set, Weber State found some momentum and kept things within two points for the first part of the set. The Waves broke away and had a 20-13 lead over WSU but the Wildcats held out.

Two big kills from Varley kept WSU in the match and a late 3-0 run with points from a kill by Megan Gnieting, a block by Gneiting and Aubrey Saunders and an ace by Cavalcanti brought the match to 23-21 with the Wildcats trailing by two.

The Waves ultimately finished out the match with a kill and a block to give them the 25-21 third set and three set sweep in the match.

The Wildcats had 26 kills from 104 attacks with only nine errors for a .163 percentage on the match while Pepperdine had 49 kills from 115 attacks and 14 errors for a .304 percentage. The Waves out dug the Wildcats 59-45 but Weber State came out with seven team blocks to Pepperdine's four.

Weber State was led by Gneiting and Varley who each had eight kills. Ashlyn Power put up 22 assists while Cavalcanti added 18 kills. On the net, Gneiting came up with six blocks for a new season high.

Cavalcanti went into the weekend with 978 career digs. In the first match of the tournament against CSUN she recorded only seven digs but made up for that by posting 23 in the win against Northeastern to officially break into the 1,000 dig club. With her 18 against Pepperdine, Cavalcanti is coming out of the weekend with 1,025 career digs and is the tenth Wildcat in school history to earn the honor.

Weber State is now 1-5 overall on the season and their nine consecutive road matches will come to end next weekend when they head to Las Vegas, Nev. to take on UNLV, Louisville and UC Irvine before. WSU's first home matches will be Sept. 12 against Utah State and Sept. 13 against Utah Valley.
