Wildcat volleyball falls twice at UNLV Challenge

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Despite a strong start to the day, the Wildcats came up just short at the UNLV Challenge.
Junior hitter Andrea Hale had 24 kills and senior hitter Amanda Varley added 22 kills for the Weber State University volleyball team, which fell 22-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-8 to host UNLV in their morning match and 25-14, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21 to Louisville in the nightcap at Cox Pavilion.
Weber State, which fell to 1-7 overall, will face UC Irvine at 12:30 p.m. MT on Saturday to wrap up the two-day, three-match tournament.
Against the Rebels, Varley had 16 kills, eight digs, and five blocks as the Wildcats pushed the match to five sets. Hale added 12 kills and Megan Gneiting had 10 kills, and six blocks for the Wildcats.
Hannah Hill-Deyoung had a season-high 11 blocks and Weber State outblocked the Rebels 15-11 as a team, and senior libero Thamires Cavalcanti had a match-high 26 digs. It's Cavalcanti's third time with 20 or more digs in the Wildcats' first eight matches.
Weber State claimed the opening set of the match 25-22, but dropped the second and third, before rallying to tie things up with a 25-22 win in the fourth.
UNLV (4-3) scored the first five points of the decisive fifth-set, however, and WSU was unable to rally.
Against the Cardinals, Hale had 12 kills and sophomore middle blocker Aubrey Saunders had a season-high nine blocks for the Wildcats. Cavalcanti had a team-high 15 digs.
Louisville (4-3) won the opening set 25-14, but Weber State fought in the second set to level the match. The Wildcats had 15 kills and hit .353 with just three errors during the second set.
The Cardinals edged away in the third and fourth sets, however, to take the match in four.
