OGDEN - Weber State started the 2017 football season in historic fashion as the Wildcats set a school record win a 76-0 route of Montana Western Saturday night at Stewart Stadium.Â
The 76 points is the most points in a game in Weber State history, breaking the record of 74 points set in 1965. It is also the largest margin of victory in school history and the first shutout for the Wildcats in 10 years.Â
Weber State scored on nearly every possession and had its way all night against Montana Western, an NAIA school out of Dillon, Montana. The Wildcats jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.Â
WSU finished with 485 yards, compared to 147 for the Bulldogs. The 'Cats also had 23 first downs and no turnovers, compared to just seven first downs and had five turnovers.Â
"We came out and executed very well and had a really clean game without a lot of mistakes," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "It was great to get so many players the opportunity to get some playing time." Â
Weber State had 10 touchdowns on the night, with eight of them coming on the ground, as Weber State rushed for 317 yards. Seven different Wildcats scored rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Kevin Smith had two TD's on the ground, both coming in the second quarter. David Jones led the rushing attack with 86 yards and a touchdown. Rashid Shaheed, Treshawn Garrett, Clay Moss, Brady May and Stefan Cantwell also had rushing touchdowns.Â
In his first game as starting quarterback, Cantwell was 10-of-14 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 11 yards and another score. He found All-America senior tight end Andrew Vollert for a 14-yard touchdown and found TyJuan Prince for a 49-yard touchdown.Â
Prince finished the day with four catches for 86 yards, while Vollert had five catches for 50 yards.Â
The Wildcat defense forced five turnovers, with four interceptions and a fumble. Junior Jordan Preator led the defensive attack with two first half interceptions and a sack. Keilan Benjamin and Breckin Gunter also had interceptions.Â
This was Weber State's first time starting the season at home since 2013, which is also the last time the Wildcats won a season opener. It was also the first shutout since beating Northern Colorado 23-0 in 2007.Â
The Wildcats now hit the road for back-to-back games in northern California, starting next Saturday, Sept. 9, at Cal. Kickoff in Berkeley will be 3 p.m. Mountain time. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Network Bay Area.Â
