Weber State falls 65-59 to Utah Valley

12/18/2018 1:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OREM, Utah – Despite a strong start Weber State women's basketball fell 65-59 to Utah Valley on Tuesday afternoon.

"This afternoon we had opportunities pull away, but didn't hit shots we'd normally make," said head coach Velaida Harris. "Their zone caused us a little trouble in the second quarter, but we made the right adjustments at half time and got some great looks. We just have to have the ball find the whole."

Late in the first quarter the Wildcats strung together a 9-2 run to take a 15-6 lead over the Wolverines. As the first quarter wound down, WSU had a 6-0 run to take a 21-13 lead.

Both teams went scoreless for the first three minutes of the second quarter. Utah Valley outscored the Wildcats 15-5 in the second quarter. The Wildcats ended up trailing 28-26 going into half time.

To start the third quarter, the Wildcats held the Wolverines scoreless for three minutes while going on a 6-0 run to tie the game up 32-32.Things remained close between to the two teams for the remainder of the quarter but Weber State still trailed 48-46 going into the fourth.

The fourth quartered started with UVU hitting a three and Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman answered with a three. Welch-Coleman's three sparked a 10-4 run for the Wildcats that put them at a 53-50 lead with five minutes remaining in the game. However, WSU couldn't maintain that lead and ended up falling 65-59.

WSU was led by Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman who had 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists on the afternoon. Kayla Watkins put up double figures with 14 points and Kori Pentzer put up a new career high with 10 points. Dominique Williams continued her powerhouse rebounding for WSU with 10.

Weber State shot 41 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three and 85 percent from the free throw line.  Utah Valley shot 40 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three, and 71 from the free throw line. WSU pulled down 39 boards to UVU's 35.

"Another thing my team needs to understand is that there is a level of urgency required night in and night out to play this game," Harris added. "Yes, we are young, but each player must become consistent with what she brings to our team every practice and every game. When we win, it's because we do it together. Our play is determined by how locked in we are on the defensive end. There was a spell in the second and fourth quarters when when we didn't lock in and that cost us."

The Wildcats drop to 3-6 overall on the season and will take on UC Riverside Thursday, Dec. 20 in Ogden. WSU starts Big Sky Conference action on Dec. 29 against Eastern Washington at home.

"We have one more pre-season game in two days and we'll learn from today," Harris said. "We will be ready to finish the pre-season strong."
