Weber State falls to Northern Colorado 71-69 in OT

Weber State women's basketball fell 71-69 in overtime against Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats started out with an 11-3 jump over the Bears. UNC answered with an 8-2 run but Weber State managed to keep the lead as the first quarter came to an end with a 16-14 score.
In the second quarter, Kailie Quinn started things off with a made 3-pointer. Things were close between to the two teams but with 4:20 left in the first half Weber State made a 6-0 run that gave them a nine point lead. WSU maintained that lead going into halftime with a 39-30 score.
Weber State started the third quarter with an 8-2 run and then later, with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter WSU captured a 13 point lead. The Bears strung together a 9-2 run to end the third quarter. Weber State still had 52-45 lead going into the final quarter.
Northern Colorado started the fourth quarter with an 8-1 run and brought things within two points with 6:33 on the clock. With just under six minutes left in the game the Bears took over the lead for the first time in the game with a 54-53 score.
Weber State struggled to find the basket in the fourth quarter. With three minutes to go in the game, Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman sank four consecutive free throws to tie the game back up at 57-57.
All of the Wildcats points in the fourth quarter came from the free throw line until 2:32 when Larryn Brooks sank a deep three. That was WSU's first field goal since there was 1:40 left in the third quarter. Brooks' three gave WSU a 60-57 lead.
Weber State played strong defense and held Northern Colorado to a four minute scoring drought. With 30 seconds left in the game, the Bears sank a three to tie everything up at 60-60. Neither team was able to score in the remainder of regulation and the game was forced into overtime.
WSU started overtime with a 7-2 run but with 13 seconds left, Northern Colorado sank a jumper in the paint to take a 68-67 lead. Weber State took the ball back with and Brooks drove to the basket to lay it up for two and take a 69-68 lead with four seconds left.
Savannah Smith was the Bears saving grace as she sank a three in the final second of the game to give Northern Colorado the 71-69 victory.
Weber State was led by Brooks who had 21 total points. Welch-Coleman also scored in double figures for the Wildcats with 17 on the night. She also added four assists. Jocelyn Adams pulled down 10 rebounds for WSU and Emily Drake rocked on defensive efforts with five steals.
WSU shot 39 percent from the field, 28 percent from the three and 64 from the free throw line. THe Wildcats had 41 total rebounds and 13 steals on the night. UNC shot 41 percent from the field, 32 percent from the three and 88 percent from the field. The Bears had 39 rebounds and six steals.
Weber State is now 16-7 overall on the season and 8-4 in Big Sky Conference play. WSU will have four of the final six games at home starting with Portland State Feb.15 and Sacramento State Feb. 17.
