Weber State falls 62-60 to PSU in final seconds

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball lost a 10 home game winning streak Thursday night as the fell to Portland State 62-60 in the final five seconds of the game.

In the first quarter Portland State got a jump on the Wildcats and after 10 minutes of play the two teams were all tied up at 15-15.

In the second quarter Portland State went on a 12-4 run. WSU's four points were from free throws and the Wildcats didn't make a field goal until Shianne Johnson took off on a fast break for a layup with 1:48 remaining in the half.

Weber State managed to maintain and only trailed Portland State 26-27 going into half time.

The Wildcats captured the lead early in the third quarter with the help of strong defensive efforts that forced the Vikings into a three minute scoring drought. With just under two minutes left in the third quarter things were all tied up at 37-37 and  WSU went on a 5-2 run to claim a 42-39 lead going into the fourth quarter.

A four minute scoring drought by the Wildcats gave the Vikings some footing to reclaim the lead with a 53-51 score with 2:35 left in the game. Things came in all tied up at 57-57 with just under a minute to play.

Weber State trailed 57-60 with 30 seconds remaining. Larryn Brooks through up a three ball that hit nothing but net to tie everything up 60-60. With three seconds left Kiana Brown drove to the hoop for an easy layup with three seconds on the clock to give Portland State the 62-60 win over WSU.

This is the first time since 2014 that Portland State has swept Weber State in a season.

Weber State was led by Kailie Quinn who had 19 points including five made from beyond the arc. Briana Gray was the only other Wildcat to drop double figures with 11 points.

Jocelyn Adams dominated the boards with 16, nine of which were offensive. She also had a solid job scoring coming up just shy of a double-double with nine points.

The Wildcats ended the night shooting a mere 27 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three and a nearly perfect night from the free throw line going 10-11 for 91 percent. Weber State outrebounded PSU 48-37.

Weber State is now on a three game losing streak and has a 16-8 overall record and sit at 8-5 in Big Sky Conference play. The Wildcats are back in action Saturday, Feb. 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
