Wildcats fall 75-57 at Montana

3/1/2018 10:08:00 PM | Men's Basketball

The Montana Grizzlies clinched the Big Sky title with a 75-57 win over Weber State Thursday night at Dahlberg Arena in Missoula.

With the win, Montana moves to 15-2 in conference play and clinches the Big Sky regular season title for the first time since 2013. The Grizzlies will be the number one seed in next week's conference tournament.

With Idaho's win over Northern Arizona, Idaho has clinched the number two seed in the conference tournament with a 13-4 record.

Thursday's loss was the third-straight for Weber State who fell to 19-10 overall and 12-5 in conference play. The Wildcats are now tied with Eastern Washington for third in the league standings at 12-5.

Weber State will finish third or fourth in the league standings. With a win in the final game of the season at Montana State on Saturday and an Eastern Washington loss, the Wildcats will clinch the third seed in the conference tournament. Otherwise, the 'Cats will be the fourth seed.

Montana never trailed in Thursday's victory and started the game on a 7-0 run. The Wildcats charged back and cut the lead to one before the Grizzlies went on a 12-2 run to take and 11-point lead midway through the first half. Weber State again rallied and cut the lead to three points before Montana took a seven-point lead at halftime.

The second half was all Montana as the Grizzlies scored the first six points of the half and never looked back. WSU was never closer than 11 and the Grizzlies led by as many as 20 points.

Montana shot 53 percent from the field and held the Wildcats to 40 percent shooting. Weber State made a season-low two 3-pointers as the Wildcats were just 2 of 11 from 3-point range. The 'Cats were first in the Big Sky in 3-pointers per game at 9.5 per game heading into Thursday's game.

Montana also outrebounded Weber State 42-25 and had 22 assists, compared to a season-low three assists for the Wildcats.

"Montana played a terrific game and they are a very good team," said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. "Their athleticism and pressure was a challenge and that was the number one cause of our offense tonight. Our team played really hard but we have some fatigue and need to try to get some energy back."

Jerrick Harding led the Wildcats with 19 points. He was 7 of 13 from the field, including 5 of 5 from the free throw line. Brekkott Chapman added 14 points on 7 of 16 shooting.

Ahmaad Rorie led Montana with 20 points.

Weber State will close out the regular season Saturday at Montana State in a game that will start at 2:00 p.m., in Bozeman and will be televised on ELEVEN Sports and Pluto TV.
