Wildcats pick up wins over SUU and Dixie State

3/6/2018 12:02:00 AM | Women's Tennis

Weber State women's tennis had a double header Sunday afternoon and the Wildcats came away with two victories. First, Weber State defeated Southern Utah 5-2 and then later defeated Dixie State 6-1.

"I am so proud of this teams effort," said head coach Mark Roberts. "We had a tough match against UND on Friday, had a long travel day and played another close match against SUU and then Dixie State in a double header. We won all three and not once did I hear anyone complain about anything. We just stayed tough and fought away to win and it was awesome. This team is improving so quickly and they are truly starting to believe in themselves. I can't wait to get back to practice this week in preparation for our Idaho State match this weekend."

Weber State started out strong against Southern Utah by taking the doubles point. In the No. 1 spot Pei_Hsuan Kuo and Caitlin Herb defeated Ghita Nassik and Daniela Cozzi 6-0. Then in the No. 3 spot, Morgan Dickason and Emily Tanner defeated Zoe Tanti and Laura Martin Lozano 7-6.

In singles action, Herb picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win over Nasik in the No. 2 spot to start things off. Dominique Beauvais followed that with a 6-2, 6-3 over Cozzi in the No. 4 spot.

McKenna Lloyd defeated Martin Lozano 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot right before Kuo defeated Tanti 6-3, 7-6 in the No. 1 spot. With Kuo's win Weber State captured five total match points giving them a 5-2 victory.

Against Dixie State, Weber State started slow by dropping the doubles point. It was not a clean sweep however as Herb and Kuo defeated Lacey Hancock and Yolena Carlon 6-1.

In singles action, Weber State was fire however as they took all six singles matches. Things started off with a win by Herb over Hancock 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 spot.

Kuo picked up a nice 6-3, 6-2 win over Carlon in the No. 1 spot. Morgan Dickason  defeated Hina Goldsmith in the No. 4 spot 6-3, 6-2.

Devi Hasan picked up a 6-0, 2-6, 6-4 win over Kana Goldsmith in the No. 6 spot. Coming into the home stretch Beauvais also had a three set win with scores of 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot over Kyra Harames.

To make the clean sweep of singles for Weber State, Emily Tanner defeated McKelle Burnett 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot.

Weber State is now 5-5 overall on the season and 2-0 in Big Sky Conference action. The Wildcats will remain home and take on Idaho State in a Big Sky matchup Friday at 11:30 a.m.
