Wildcats fall 41-10 at Utah in season opener

SALT LAKE CITY - Weber State got out to a quick start but it was all Utah after that as the Utes handed the Wildcats a 41-10 win Thursday night in the season opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Utah totaled 587 yards of total offense, compared to just 59 yards for the Wildcats. Utah rushed for 268 yards and threw for 319, while Weber State rushed for 48 yards and threw for just 13.

The Wildcats got off to a great start, jumping out to a 10-0 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter. Weber State's Kallin Fisher recovered a Utah fumble, which led to a 42-yard field goal by Trey Tuttle.

On the next Utah possession, Landon Stice intercepted a Ute pass and returned it 30 yards to the two-yard line. Kaden Jenks then rushed in from two-yards out for the 10-0 lead.

After that it was all Utah, as the Utes scored 41 unanswered points. The Utes led 17-10 at halftime and added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 31-10 and never looked back.

"We got off to a fast start and I thought we were playing well for a while, but after Utah got going, we didn't respond well," said WSU head coach Jay Hill. "We got our butts kicked by a dang good team. We forced some turnovers and had some big plays but we didn't capitalize. We need to get much better and we will."

The Wildcats forced four Utah turnovers, with three fumbles and one interception. But offensively, the 'Cats had just three first downs, compared to 25 by Utah.

Clay Moss led the Wildcats with 26 yards rushing. Jenks finished with 19 yards rushing and was 5 of 22 passing for 13 yards.

Keilan Benjamin Jonah Williams and Landon Stice all had seven tackles. Benjamin had a sack and the Wildcats had six tackles for loss.

Weber State is back on the road next week, playing at Cal Poly in a non-conference game on Sept. 8.
