Wildcats beat Cal Poly 24-17 for first win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Red shirt freshman Josh Davis rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns and No. 10 Weber State picked up its first win of the season with a 24-17 victory of Cal Poly Saturday night at Spanos Stadium. 

Playing in just his second career game and his first career start, Davis finished with 23 carries on the night for the 177 rushing yards. 

The two teams were nearly identical statistically, as Weber State finished with 324 total yards, compared to 321 for Cal Poly. WSU rushed for 193 yards with the Mustangs with 188, and Weber State threw for 131 yards, while Cal Poly had 133. 

The Wildcats got the scoring started on their first drive, taking it 75 yards for a score, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by Davis. 

Cal Poly came back with a 22-yard field goal but the Wildcats ended the first half with a 21-yard field goal by Trey Tuttle. 

The Mustangs scored first in the second half as Jake Jeffrey scored on a seven-yard touchdown to tie the game 10-10 midway through the third quarter. 

The Wildcats regained the lead as Jake Constantine found Rashid Shaheed for a 20-yard touchdown late in the third quarter to put the 'Cats up 17-10. 

On Weber State's next possession, Davis had a 60-yard run, then capped the drive with a five-yard touchdown to give WSU a 24-10 lead. 

Cal Poly scored a touchdown with 3:41 remaining to make it 24-17. After the Mustangs got the ball back, Adam Rodriguez recovered a Mustang fumble with 1:45 left to seal the win for the Wildcats. 

Red shirt freshman Kaden Jenks started the game at quarterback but left the game in the first half for concussion protocol. Sophomore Jake Constantine made his first appearance at Weber State and finished the game 9 of 15 passing for 84 yards with one touchdown. 

Shaheed had six catches for 56 yards and Devon Cooley had two catches for 22 yards. 

Defensively, Landon Stice led the 'Cats with 12 tackles while LeGrand Toia had nine tackles with one sack and Jawain Harrison had nine tackles. 

Up next

Weber State's home opener and final non-conference game will be Saturday, Sept. 15 as the Wildcats host nationally-ranked South Dakota. Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Stewart Stadium.
