Weber State drops a tough one to Portland State

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball had a tough go against a strong Portland State team falling 77-59 Saturday afternoon.
"We played well early, but still we have to capitalize," said head coach Velaida Harris. "Portland State is a good team. I thought we battled early. We tried to avoid that second quarter loll that seems to hit us every game but couldn't fight the momentum in the second half and that hurt us."
The Wildcats got down 6-0 early in the first quarter but came back and tied it up 8-8 with three minutes left. Portland State went on an 8-1 run to end the first quarter leaving WSU behind 18-11.
Weber State trailed for the entirety of the second quarter. Kayla Watkins executed a post move down low with five minutes left in the half to cut PSU's lead down to eight. However, Portland State managed back-to-back three pointers to end the half taking a 42-28 lead over the Wildcats.
WSU couldn't find any momentum and trailed the entire second half to PSU. The Vikings finished the game with a 77-59 victory over the Wildcats.
Weber State was led by Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman who had 16 points. Watkins also scored in double figures with 11 points on the night and had the game high of rebounds with eight.
The Wildcats shot 42 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three and 66 percent from the free throw line.
Weber State drops to 3-13 overall on the season and 0-6 in Big Sky Conference play. WSU will hit the road for just one game next week at Northern Colorado on Thursday, Jan. 16.
