Wildcats fight tough in 72-60 loss to the Griz

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball played strong defense but couldn't pull out a victory as the Wildcats fell 72-60 to the University of Montana Saturday afternoon.

"Proud of my team's effort," said head coach Velaida Harris. "We executed down the stretch just didn't hit the shots we needed to."

Weber State drops to 4-15 overall on the season and 1-8 in Big Sky Conference play.

Weber State had three athletes score in double figures with Kayla Watkins leading the way with 19 points. Watkins ended the night with a double-double as he also pulled down 11 rebounds.

Weber State kept the game close for the entire first half. With 2:47 remaining in the first quarter the game was all tied up at 14-14. By the end of the first WSU trailed by three.

In the second quarter Weber State was only outscored 12-11 in the second quarter and trailed 32-28 going into halftime.

The Wildcats battled through and stayed tough in the third quarter never letting Montana string together any big scoring runs. Going into the final quarter of play, the Wildcats trailed 49-43.

Over the course of three minutes, late in the fourth, Montana went on an 8-0 run. Weber State couldn't gain any traction to fight the deficit and the Griz pulled out a 72-60 victory over the Wildcats.

Stats to know
- All of Montana's starters pulled down double figures and the Griz were led by Gabi Harrington who had 18.
- Both teams only scored two points off the bench.
- WSU outscored UM 26-20 in the paints.

Game notes
- Weber State has now lost 11 of their last 12 games.
- Emily Drake ended the night with 17 points and Jaiamoni Welch-Coleman dropped 13 points.

What's ahead
The Wildcats hit the road to Portland State on Jan. 31 and Sacramento State on Feb. 2.

WSU's next home game will be Feb. 7 at noon against Southern Utah, as the Wildcats host the annual Field Trip Day.
