Weber State picks up three set win over Portland State

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball came away with a clean three set sweep over Portland State Thursday night.

What Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "Today was a great example of us being better today than we were yesterday and it was a nice step in the right direction."

How it happened: Weber State started out the first set on a hot streak taking an 8-2 lead. WSU continued to press forward with fire and energy. WSU pushed through several long runs for the point and jumped out to a 10 point lead.  WSU continued its first set dominance claiming the set 25-12. 

In the second set, Portland State was the first one to break away with a substantial lead. The Vikings popped out to a 12-8 lead over WSU. Aubrey Saunders-Adams had a kill that sparked a 5-0 run and with a Rylin Roberts ace, Weber State tied the set up at 12-12. 

Later in the set, Weber State went on an 8-2 run to take a commanding 22-17 lead. Portland State made a surge with three consecutive points. However, Weber State answered with a kill from Saunders-Adams, a back-to-back kills by Dani Nay to give Weber State the 25-20 second set.

Weber State started the third set with four consecutive points. WSU pushed on and strung together several runs of three or four points to push their lead to 16-9. The Wildcats never let up and a kill by Saunders-Adams and a kill by Megan Gneiting gave WSU the 25-15 third set win.

 Killin' It: Weber State was led by Dani Nay who had 11 kills from 22 swings and no errors for an even and an impressive .500 hitting percentage. Gneiting also put up double digit kills with 10. Saunders-Adams also had an impressive night offensively with eight kills from 12 attacks with no errors for a .667 percentage. 

WSU ended the night with 36 total kills from 103 swings with just 11 errors for a .243 percentage. 

Weber State had a great night off the serve having 11 aces. Nay led WSU with four aces. 

Ashlyn Power continued to lead as she helped out the Wildcats with 33 assists. 

Diggin' it: Katelyn Erwin led WSU on the back row with 15 digs. Rylin Roberts and Nay were close to breaking double digits as they both added nine for Weber State.  The Wildcats ended the match with 56 total digs. 

Blockin' it: Saunders-Adams was fire on the net tonight. She racked up an impressive nine total blocks to tie her career-high. She had two solos and seven assists. Gneiting was also a powerhouse on the net recording five blocks on the night. 

Notes to know: Weber State is now 11-5 overall on the season and 2-3 in Big Sky Conference play.  WSU has now beaten Portland State in the last four consecutive matchups between the teams. 

Next Up: WSU will stay home to finish out Wildcat weekend as they host Sacramento State, Saturday Oct. 12 at noon.
