Wildcat soccer draws Vandals 1-1

10/11/2019 11:06:00 PM | Women's Soccer

OGDEN, UT – The Weber State women's soccer team fought valiantly for 110 minutes of play against the Idaho Vandals tonight. After two double-overtime, golden goal periods, the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

The Wildcats started the game with high intensity as senior defender Madison Carter broke open Weber State's shot attempts in the first three minutes of play. WSU didn't let down as the half went on, and put up eight shots to Idaho's five. The Vandals goalkeeper, Julia Byerlein, saved five shots on goal from the Wildcats, and secured the half at no score for either side.

Weber State began the second half with even more intensity than the first despite the near freezing temperatures. The Wildcats took a season high of 11 shots in the second half, with seven on frame. Finally, in the 72nd minute, Mylee Broad slotted a ball to Olivia Barton who placed it to the left of Byerlein to give the 'Cats a goal. This was Barton's first goal of the season, and fourth in her career. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, the Vandals countered with a header goal from Savannah Foster in the 75th minute to tie the game 1-1.

"I was pleased with the way our girls played tonight," said Interim Head Coach Meagan Thunell. "We created good chances to score, and Olivia Barton had a nice goal."

In the 87th minute of play, Idaho's Juliana deTar received a red card to force the Vandals to play a man down for the rest of the game. At the end of regulation, the game was tied 1-1, and went into two, 10 minute golden-goal periods.

The Wildcats controlled most of the possession in the first overtime period. In fact, Weber State totaled 62% of possession over Idaho's 38% for the entire game. Jasmine Lotey, Nixie Hernandez, and Haley Thomas took shots in the ten minute period, but couldn't find the back of the net. The Wildcats played well defensively and didn't allow a single shot. Neither team scored in the first overtime to force it to the second.

Weber State fought hard in the second overtime period, racking up three shots from Taylor Scadlock, Megan Price, and Sadie Noble in the limited ten minutes. The Vandals were, again, held to no shots. Though the Wildcats gave themselves numerous chances, they weren't able to find the back of the net by the end of the game. After 110 minutes in almost freezing temperatures, the game finished in a 1-1 draw.

Weber State finished the game with 26 shots, a season high for the Wildcats.

"To possess the ball as much as we did, and to have as many shots as we had without coming away with a win is disappointing, to say the least," said Thunell. "I'll give credit to Idaho's goalkeeper. She had some nice saves tonight that kept them in the game. We also failed to capitalize on some great scoring opportunities. So yes, the result was not what we wanted, but we did some good things tonight. Now we turn our minds to Sunday's game and put this one behind us."

Up next, Weber State (2-9-2) will take on Eastern Washington (2-0-1) on Sunday, October 13th at 12:00 pm MDT.
