Wildcats battle for five set win over Vandals

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball battled and preserved for a strong five set win over Idaho on Thursday.
What Head Coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "Idaho is a good volleyball team and we felt if we played our game we would have a good shot. We proved that if we can go into a game with a good mindset we can compete with anyone. We played with a lot of intensity, passion and emotion in the fourth and fifth set and it showed."
How it happened: The two teams started the match off fairly even with each other. Neither team had any significant runs or score deficits. Later in the set, Weber State was trailing 15-13 and went on an 8-1 run to take a 21-16 lead. The final four points on the way to 25 went and back and forth but a kill by Dani Nay and another by Rylin Roberts ultimately gave WSU the 25-20 first set win.
In the second set, Weber State jumped out to a commanding 9-3 lead over Idaho. The Vandals came back and tied the game at 11-11. Later, WSU pushed back for a 21-17 lead and Idaho tied it back up at 22-22. Idaho reached set point first and a Wildcat error gave the Vandals the pulled out a 25-22 second set win.
During the majority of the third set neither team managed big momentous energy. They both kept pushing with consistency and found themselves tied up at 17-17. A kill by Hannah Hill-DeYoung sparked a 4-0 run to give WSU a 21-18 lead. Yet again, Idaho tied the match up and forced things into extra points. WSU found themselves at set point two seperate times but Idaho ended up finishing first with a 29-27 lead over WSU.
Weber State started the fourth set our strong with a 9-3 lead and stayed strong forcing their lead out to 17-9. The Wildcats never looked back and finished the set on an 8-2 run giving them the 25-12 victory. With the match tied up at two sets a piece, the Wildcats and the Vandals headed into the fifth set.
Weber State jumped out to a 6-2 lead over Idaho early in the fifth set and were the first team to hit the eight point mark. The Wildcats worked through and finished out with a 15-11 win.
Killing It: Nay hit out of the gym tonight breaching a new career high of 24 kills from 40 attacks with five errors for an even .200 on the night.
Megan Gneiting also had an impressive offensive night hitting kills from 15 kills from 32 attacks with just four errors for a .344 percentage.
Rylin Roberts added 13 kills and Aubrey Saunders-Adams rocked 10 to help WSU's offense.
Ashlyn Power also reached new heights as she recorded 63 assists for a new career high.
Digging it: Helena Khnouri led WSU on the digs with 21 on the night. Power added 17 and Gneiting had 16. Roberts also recorded double digits with 10. In total, WSU rocked 85 digs.
Doubling it: Weber State had three Wildcats with double-doubles. Power had her 10th on the year with 63 assists and 16 digs. Roberts had 13 kills and 10 digs while Megan Gneiting posted 15 kills and 16 digs.
Notes to know: Weber State now advances to 14-6 overall on the season and advanced to a 5-4 Big Sky record.
Next Up: WSU will hit the road to take on the Eagles of Eastern Washington on Saturday Oct. 26 before returning home to host Southern Utah and Northern Arizona.
