Strong start falls short as 'Cats fall 76-53 to Tigers

11/21/2019 3:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball had an impressive start but couldn't finish strong as the Wildcats fell 76-53 to Pacific, Thursday afternoon.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "We made strides today. We came out playing the way I expect us to play. We were aggressive, we ran and most importantly we got stops. Our shooting guard came out of her slump. Our posts were aggressive defensively. We knew Pacific was going to make a run in the first half and we had to sustain. That's our next step. If we practice at that level for two hours every day, we give ourselves a chance in games like this. We left two kids at home due to injury so that was part of it as well. When we defend and take care of the ball we're pretty good. We just need to get better with each game. I saw more courage than comfort, today so for that, I can see the light."

How it happened: In the first quarter Weber State started out powerful The Wildcats put together an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 lead at the halfway point in the first quarter. WSU hit three, three-pointers in that 11-0 stretch. As the first quarter wound down, Kayla Watkins executed a layup and gave WSU a 22-9 lead.

WSU hit a cold streak in the second quarter. Pacific held WSU to 4:45 without a field goal meanwhile going on a 16-3 run to tie the game up at 30-30 with just under two minutes remaining in the half. The Tigers took the lead for the first time in the game with a minute left in the half.

Watkins started the second half off with a made layup. The Tigers put on a full-court press and was able to push on and take a 45-32 lead over the Wildcats. WSU struggled in the third quarter and went on a five-minute scoring drought. The drought was broken when Liz Graves sunk a pair of free throws. Pacific ended up taking a 53-38 lead over WSU going into the end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats tried to claw their way out of the score deficit they created and was able to score 15 points but couldn't catch up and fell 76-53.

Leaders: Weber State had three Wildcats score in double figures. Watkins led WSU with 15 points. She also had the team-high with nine rebounds. Graves hit double figures with 11 points and Kori Pentzer had 10.

Ula Chamberlin and Ciara James each had three assists for WSU.

Comparison: Weber State shot 43 percent from the field, 35 percent from the three and 43 percent from the free-throw line. The Wildcats ended the game with 34 rebounds, seven assists and seven steals. The Wildcats scored 22 points in the paint.
