Weber State takes down UC Riverside 64-54

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball picked up the first win of the season with a 64-54 win over UC Riverside on Sunday afternoon.
What head coach Velaida Harris said: "Tonight we were more disciplined, tough and stayed together which is crucial for this young team. Kayla had 17 boards and Ula 6-9 from the three. Liz got us off to a good start and neutralized their best player. Everyone contributed. It was important for us to get this win going into break. The ladies have been working very hard. What they felt and experienced in the first half vs. Pacific carried over to tonight's game. I'm proud of them and proud of my staff for their commitment to the vision. It's about the process. "
How it happened: In the first quarter Weber State stayed tight with UC Riverside being tied 12-12 with just under four minutes on the clock. The Highlanders managed to come out of the first quarter with a 19-16 lead over the Wildcats.
In the second quarter, the Wildcats maintained pace and chipped away at the score deficit. Eventually, WSU tied it up at 26-26 with 3:30 left in the first half. Weber State finished the first half outscoring UCR 11-6 and had a 36-32 lead at the half.
Weber State pushed their lead to 10 with three minutes to go in the third quarter and was able to maintain a 52-46 lead going into the final quarter of play.
The Wildcats continued to prowl in the fourth, keeping the lead the entire quarter and as the clocked ticked down pulled out the 64-54 victory.
Leaders: Weber State had two Wildcats score in double figures and were led by Ula Chamberlin who dropped 20 points, going 7-13 from the field and 6-9 from the three. Chamberlin also had the game high with five assists.
Liz Graves also recorded double digits with an impressive 16 points.
Kayla Watkins had a powerful night on the boards with 17 rebounds.
Watkins and Graves each had three steals for WSU.
Comparison: Weber State shot 34 percent from the field, 47 percent from the three and 50 percent from the free-throw line. The Wildcats ended the game with 48 rebounds, 13 assists and nine steals. The Wildcats scored 19 points off turnovers, 14 points in the paint,
UC Riverside shot 34 percent from the field, 14 from the three and 61 percent from the free throw line. The Highlanders had 40 rebounds, 10 assists and three steals. UCR scored six points off of turnovers and 28 points in the paint.
Both teams had 21 turnovers.
Notes to know: Weber State is now 1-4 overall on the season.
Up Next: Weber State will take a break for the holiday and will return Dec. 5 at UTEP and Dec. 7 at New Mexico State.
