Wildcats fall 70-51 to Miners

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball had a strong start but couldn't finish falling to UTEP 70-51 Thursday night. 

How it happened:Both teams started off the game on a two minute scoring drought. Weber State's Ula Chamberlin broke the drought with a made layup. WSU then pushed on for a 6-3 lead. UTEP came back and by the end of the first quarter, Weber State trailed 11-10. 

The Wildcats started the second quarter with an 8-2 run and jumped out for an 18-13 lead. With three minutes on the clock, the game was tied at 22-22. UTEP went on a 7-0 run to end the first half and the Wildcats trailed 29-22 going into halftime. 

The third quarter proved to be the highest scoring quarter for both teams. Weber State put up 16 points in the third, but UTEP went off for 23 points in the quarter and WSU trailed 52-38 going into the fourth quarter. 

WSU outscored UTEP 11-7 throughout the fourth quarter. However, the Miners went on a 9-1 run to end the game and Weber State fell 70-51. 

Leaders: Weber State was led by Ula Chamberlin in scoring. Chamberlin had 17 points and went 6-14 from the field, 2-5 from the three and 3-4 from the line. She also had the team high with four assists and two steals.  Liz Graves also recorded double figures with 14 points. 

Ciara James led WSU on the boards pulling down nine, while Graves was right with her with eight. 

Comparison: Weber State shot 35 percent from the field, 23 percent from the three and 69 percent from the free-throw line. The Wildcats ended the game with 35 rebounds, nine assists and four steals. The Wildcats scored 26 points in the paint and 12 points off the bench. 

It was a high fouling game as WSU had 30 personal fouls and UTEP had 22. 

UTEP shot 34 percent from the field, 25 percent from the three and 61 percent from the free throw line. The Miners ended the game with 42 rebounds, 12 assists and 14 steals. UTEP had 30 points in the paint and 32 off the bench. 

Notes to know: Weber State is now 1-5 overall on the season.
