WSU suffers 77-47 loss to NMSU

12/7/2019 4:18:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Weber State women's basketball took on New Mexico State Saturday afternoon and suffered a 77-47 loss.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "Tough one tonight. We had seven kids available for the game. The Aggies shot the lights out in the first half and we couldn't find the rim. My group has to understand that every night is a fight. Our opponent doesn't care that we only have seven people who can play. When you struggle to score, your defense has to travel well.

"I was proud of Gina. She doesn't see a lot of floor time, but she came in tonight and gave us good minutes. The three guards had to go all 40 minutes. For the most part, they put their head down and worked. That's all I asked of each of them in the second half and they did it. Not the result we wanted, but until we get a couple kids back, these youngins must continue to develop, learn and grow."

How it happened: New Mexico State started the first quarter off on a 6-0 run. The Wildcats answered with a 6-0 run to tie the game up early. The Aggies ended the first quarter with an 11-4 run to take a 17-10 lead over the Wildcats.

Weber State hit a cold streak in the second quarter going on an eight minute scoring drought. NMSU took a 38-16 lead over WSU at the half.

The Wildcats had a strong third quarter, which proved to be their highest scoring quarter of the game. WSU had 17 points in the third. Ula Chamberlin and Liz Graves each had six points in the third quarter for Weber State.

The Wildcats couldn't cut the score deficit and NMSU came away with a 77-47 win.

Leaders: Graves led WSU with 17 points and nine rebounds. Chamberlin added nine points for WSU.

Comparison: Weber State shot 34 percent from the field, 41 percent from the three and 44 percent from the free-throw line. The Wildcats ended the game with 25 rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals. WSU had the fewest turnovers in a game so far this season with 13.
The Wildcats scored 25 points in the paint.

NMSU shot 58 percent from the field, 61 percent from the three and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Aggies ended the game with 34 rebounds, 17  assists, seven turnovers, three blocks and seven steals. NMSU had 44 points in the paint.

Notes to know: Weber State is now 1-6 overall on the season.
