Weber State picks up big 72-46 victory over UVU

12/17/2019 7:53:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball had a big victory Tuesday night by taking down Utah Valley 72-46.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "I'm proud of our team. The difference in tonight and our last few games is that we stuck to the game plan and executed. We are better when we get stops defensively and run. We're not that good in the half court. When we get three stops in a row we have a chance to win. Jadyn came out with the right mindset. She was aggressive and a beast on the glass. CIara was active, vocal and solid for us. On the offensive end, it was nice to see Liz get buckets. It was nice to have Daryn back on the floor, her energy is infectious.

"I've been talking to these girls about discipline and for us that is being mentally tough when things aren't going our way and executing on offensive and sticking to the game plan defensively.

"I told the kids who have a tough time communicating I struggle with and I needed them to be better at that and they all stepped up. It was a good win. We needed it and now it's on to Utah."

How it happened: Weber State started the first quarter by jumping out to an early 14-5. The Wildcats held Utah Valley scoreless for 6:13 seconds of the first quarter. WSU pulled out of the quarter with a 19-10 lead.

Utah Valley shortened WSU's lead to just four points but the Wildcats pressed on and took  a 33-23 lead going into halftime. Liz Graves lead the Wildcats with 14 points by the end of the first half.

UVU came out of the half out scoring WSU 10-4 in the first five minutes. Later in the quarter, Weber State went on a solid 7-0 run propelling them to a 50-35 lead at the end of the third quarter. Despite the slow start to the quarter, WSU out scored UVU 20-12 in the third quarter.  Weber State had a 53-35 lead going into the final quarter.

The Wildcats dominated the fourth quarter and ended the game on an 11-5 to run to help them get to a 72-46 win over Utah Valley.

Leaders: Graves continued her hot streak into the second half and ended the game with 26 total points. She went 10-14 from the field and 3-4 from the three. The were three more Wildcats that recorded double figures. Ula Chamberlin had 14 for WSU while Ciara James and Jadyn Matthews both added 10. Matthews hit double digits for the first time in her career.

Comparison: Weber State shot 50 percent from the field, 36.4 percent from the three and 69.6 percent from the free-throw line. The Wildcats ended the game with 38 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. WSU had the fewest turnovers in a game so far this season with 12.
The Wildcats scored 36 points in the paint, 10 points off of second chances and 11 points off the bench.
