Weber State drops season opener 85-45 to No. 11 UCLA

11/5/2019 11:04:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball started the 2019-20 season Tuesday night against No. 11 UCLA and fell 85-65.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "Tonight was a great experience for us. Playing #11 in the country is a challenge. Once we settled down in the 2nd half, I felt like we were able to execute offensively. Composure. Yes, we're young, but that's no excuse to turn the ball over. We are so worried about doing the "right thing" that we don't make the basketball play. I told our kids that we were going to learn and grow from this game tonight. We will."

How it happened: UCLA jumped out to a 12-0 lead right off the tip. A pair of free throws by Ula Chamberlin broke the scoring drought. Kori Pentzer was able to sink a three-pointer on a fast break later in the quarter to help out the Wildcats.

To start the second quarter, Weber State held UCLA to just four points in the first four minutes. Going into halftime the Wildcats trailed 44-19 to the Bruins.

Weber State adjusted to the pace of the game and started the third quarter off with a 6-0 run. The third quarter proved to be the best for the Wildcats as WSU scored 16 points.

In the final three minutes of the game, Weber State held UCLA  to just a pair of free throws in scoring. WSU ended up falling 85-45 to UCLA.

Leaders: Weber State was led by freshman Chamberlin who dropped an impressive 15 points in her collegiate debut. She went 5-10 from the field and went 4-6 from the free-throw line she also had the game-high with four assists. Ciara James was the next highest scorer for WSU with eight points on the night.

Freshman, Jadyn Matthews led the Wildcats on the boards with six on the night. Liz Graves also had an impressive night on the boards leading the team with three offensive boards.

Comparison: Weber State shot 30  percent from the field, 25 percent from beyond the arc and 62 percent from the free throw line. The Wildcats ended the night with 31 rebounds, nine assists and 26 turnovers. Weber State scored 13 points from turnovers and 12 in the paint.

UCLA  shot 45 percent from the field, 17 percent from the three and 80 percent from the free-throw line. The Bruins ended the night with 48 rebounds, 21 assists and 15 turnovers. UCLA scored 27 points off of turnovers and 48 in the paint.
