Weber State falls 78-59 to Portland in scrappy battle

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball put up a scrappy fight with Portland on Saturday night and fell 78-59.
What head coach Velaida Harris said: "We ran well in transition tonight. We're so young we have to get the easy buckets like the ones you get in transition. We also got to see how scrappy this team can be. In the first half, we gave up 52 points and we have to lock that down. It's hard to fight to get back into a game when we're young and we're learning. Those young kids definitely showed up and showed their fight."
How it happened: The Wildcats trailed 12-6 early in the first quarter. WSU put together a 5-0 run to trail by one point with five minutes left in the first. Weber State hung close to trail 23-19 at the end of the first quarter.
Portland came up with momentum in the second quarter and propelled for a 52-39 lead over the Wildcats at halftime.
Defensively Weber State found a groove in the second half. Weber State only gave up 26 points in the second half and only gave up nine in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, the Wildcats couldn't dig themselves out of the score deficit and fell 78-59.
Leaders: Weber State was led by Liz Graves who had 15 points going 6-11 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line. Ciara James also scored in double figures with 13 points and led all players with nine rebounds including four offensive boards.
Comparison: Weber State shot 39.3 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from beyond the arc and 72 percent from the free throw line. The Wildcats ended the night with 35 rebounds, eight assists, eight steals and 24 turnovers. Weber State scored 16 points from turnovers and 30 in the paint. WSU scored 17 points off of second chances.
Portland shot 56 percent from the field, 43 percent from the three and 83 percent from the free-throw line. The Pilots ended the night with 21 rebounds, 12 assists and 16turnovers. Portland scored 23 points off of turnovers and 34 in the paint.
Up Next: Weber State will hit the road for five consecutive road games. First off WSU heads to the University of Washington Nov. 13 and next will take on Pacific Nov. 21.
