Weber State drops Big Sky Opener 63-53 to EWU

12/28/2019 5:26:00 PM | Women's Basketball

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball started the Big Sky Conference season Saturday afternoon with a 63-53 loss to Eastern Washington.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "I was proud of my team in the fourth quarter. We fought, we scrapped and got back into the game. The problem was the first quaerter. Our game plan, was pretty good, but EWU came out on fire from the three. Did we expect it? No, but yiou have to adjust. We began to ball watch and allowed open looks on the week side.

"It was nice to have Kayla Watkins and Ashley Thoms back. It gave us more depth off the bench. Listen, conference is a whole new ball game. We have to expect the road to be tough and we may not get calls. We have to toughen up. Shots were not falling tonight, defense has to travel.

"Again, I'm proud of the effort and fight down the stretch, but we have to be disciplined for 40 complete minutes."

How it happened: Weber State got on the board first with a made three pointer by Liz Graves. Eastern Washington then went on to take a 14-3 lead. Weber State had a 5-0 run at the end of the quarter and managed to hold EWU scoreless for the final 2:37 of the quarter. By the end of the first quarter, Weber State trailed 22-10 to Eastern Washington.

Weber State went on a 7-0 run later in the first quarter and brought the score within nine points. EWU never let WSU gain any footing after that and went on to take a 39-21 lead at the half.

The second half started off slow for both teams as neither team scored for the first five minutes of the third quarter. The Eagles maintained for a 50-31 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Weber State had a strong fourth quarter outscoring Eastern Washington 22-13. WSU couldn't dig themselves all the way out of the score deficit and EWU pulled away with a 63-53 win over the Wildcats.

Leaders: Liz Graves led the Wildcats with 13 points and Kayla Watkins followed up with 11. Graves and Jadyn Matthews tied with seven boards a piece for the game high. Watkins had the game high with seven assists.
