Weber State downs CSUN in three sets

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball finished up the Wildcat Invitational Saturday afternoon with a three set victory over CSUN.
What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "I like how our team responded to three really great teams. Last night against Portland they taught us a lesson. This afternoon we applied some lessons we learned. Overall, we had a good weekend and we grew as a team and are ready for next week at BYU."
How it happened:
Both teams started the match off strong staying within one point of each other and eventually tied up at 15-15. WSU took an 18-15 lead but it didn't last long as CSUN brought it within one point with a 22-21 score. Sam Schiess had a great swing for a kill and a big block by Kennedy Williams put WSU at set point. A Matador error gave the Wildcats the first set with a 25-21 score.
Weber State controlled the entirety of the second set. WSU pushed for a 16-10 lead and then claimed the win with a 25-19 score. CSUN never strung together more than two points at a time.
In the third set, Weber State jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Then pushed that to an 18-10 lead. The Wildcats never let up and pulled away with a 25-18 third set win.
Offensively: Weber State was led by Williams who had 13 kills 24 attacks with only one error for a .500 hitting percentage. Megan Gneiting also hit in double figures with 11 kills from 25 attacks and only two errors for a .360 percentage. Ashlyn Power had 40 assists to contribute to the Wildcat offense. WSU ended the game with 42 kills from 94 attacks and only seven errors for a .372 hitting percentage.
Defensively: Rylin Roberts was the only Wildcat to record double digit digs with 10. Helena Khouri was close behind with nine. Williams also added three blocks to the defensive efforts. WSU ended the night with 35 digs and eight total team blocks.
Notes to know: WSU is now 2-1 overall in the season. With Weber State was also named tournament champion due to their overall match winning percentage. Kennedy Williams was named the tournament MVP and Ashlyn Power was named to the All-Tournament team.
Next Up: WSU hits the road but isn't going far, as the Wildcats head to Provo, Utah to the BYU Doterra Classic to take on Sam Houston State, LIU Brooklyn and BYU. WSU's next home game will be Sept. 21 against Utah State.
