Weber State downs Sam Houston State in three

9/5/2019 6:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball picked up a strong three-set victory over Sam Houston State Thursday afternoon in the first day of the BYU Doterra Invitational.

What head coach Jeremiah Larsen said: "That was a solid and consistent effort. Sam Houston State is a nice team and really gave us problems. However, we stayed composed and made some really nice adjustments. I'm happy with our effort and a good start to the tournament. "

How it happened: In the first set, Weber State started out a little slow, trailing 10-7. They woke up and went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-12 lead. The Bearkats tied it up at 18-18 and Weber State went on a 5-0 run. Two points away from a first set win, WSU capitalized on two Sam Houston State errors for a 25-21 first set victory.

The Bearkats jumped out early on the Wildcats, again, to start the second set. The Wildcats didn't let that stand for long and went on an 8-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. After that Weber State commanded the pace and play of the second set. To end the second set, Weber State went on a 5-0 run for a 25-19 win.

The third set didn't stay true to the pattern of the match as the Wildcats jumped out to a 12-9 lead early in the set. Weber State continued on with a consistent effort and went on to take a 23-18 lead. Hannah Hill-DeYoung came up with a kill and a Bearkat error brought WSU to set point. Megan Gneiting ended things for the Wildcats with a kill for a 25-18 third set victory. WSU ended the third set hitting .414 with 15 kills from 29 attacks and had just three errors.

Weber State claimed the match in three sets.

Offensively: Weber State had four Wildcats tie for the match-high in kills. Rylin Roberts, Gneiting, Kennedy Williams and Sam Schiess all had nine kills for WSU. Schiess ended the night with a .727 hitting percentage with nine kills from 11 attacks and just one error. Ashlyn Power ended the match with 32 attacks.

The Wildcats finished the match with 43 total kills from 115 attacks and 11 errors for a .278 hitting percentage. WSU wracked up 37 assists and had three aces.

Defensively: Helena Khouri led WSU's digging efforts with 12 on the afternoon. Rylin Roberts was not far behind with 11. Power was just shy of a double-double with nine digs on the defensive efforts. Weber State's blocking powers were not to be reckoned with as WSU recorded 13.0 total team blocks and Hill-DeYoung led the efforts with two solos and eight assists for 10 total blocks.

Notes to know: WSU has now won two consecutive matches in three sets. Weber State is now 3-1 overall on the season.

Next Up: Weber State will stay at the BYU Doterra Invitational to take on LIU Brooklyn tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. and BYU on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. WSU's next home game will be Sept. 21 against Utah State.
