Weber State falls to Northern Arizona 88-82

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball struggled from the line to give NAU the edge needed to take the 88-82 win over the Wildcats.
What head coach Velaida Harris said: "If we make free throws and guard one-on-one on defense we win the game. We did not do either of those things and the result was an 88-82 loss. We will continue to get better.
How it happened: Weber State had the lead over Northern Arizona the entire first quarter. WSU ended the first quarter with a 14-13 lead.
NAU had a big second quarter and outscored WSU 27-19. WSU struggled with turnovers having nine in the second. NAU ended up taking a 40-33 lead over WSU at the half.
In the third quarter, the two teams were neck and neck, WSU ended up outscoring NAU 24-23 but WSU still trailed 63-57 at the end of the third quarter.
WSU had a big fourth quarter and brought the score within just two points several times but the Wildcats were never able to recapture the lead as they fell 88-82.
Leaders: Weber State had six Wildcats score in double figures. Jadyn Matthews led the way with a new career high of 15 points. Daryn Hickok also had a career high with 13 points. Ula Chamberlin and Kayla Watkins each added 12 for WSU. Liz Graves recorded 11 points while Shyanne Loiland put up double figures for the first time in her career with 10.
Matthews Led WSU with seven rebounds and Watkins wasn't far behind with six. Chamberlin led WSU with five assists and two steals.
Comparison: Weber State shot 56 percent from the field, 33 percent from the three and 65 percent from the free throw line. WSU ended the game with 26 total rebounds. WSU had 38 points in the paint and 27 off the bench.
NAU shot 44 percent from the field, 31 percent from the three and 83 percent from the line. The Lumberjacks ended the game with 30 total rebounds. NAU had 36 points in the paint, eight off the bench, and 25 from turnovers.
Notes to know: Weber State is now 2-10 overall on the season and 0-3 in Big Sky Conference play. This was WSU's highest scoring game of the season so far.
Up Next: Weber State will hit the road to take on Northern Colorado Thursday, Jan. 9 before hosting Sacramento State on Saturday, Jan. 11.
