Wildcats stay strong but falls 69-65 to Bears

OGDEN – Weber State women's basketball had a strong first half but fell just short to Northern Colorado Saturday afternoon with a final score of 69-65.

What head coach Velaida Harris said: "This is the first time in a long time I was able to go into the locker room and say we did a lot of things well. We still have to learn how to finish and tighten up our execution, but overall today was much better overall.

How it happened:Weber State started the game out strong by taking a 13-8 lead in the first quarter and led 13-11 at the end of the first.

In the second quarter Weber State started on a 7-0 run. WSU maintained the lead the majority of the second quarter. Northern Colorado hit a three pointer in the final seconds of the first half to take the lead from the Wildcats. WSU trailed 28-27 at the half.

WSU hung close in the third quarter never trailing by more than five. At the end of the third quarter, WSU trailed 46-41 to UNC.

Weber State surged at the end of the fourth quarter. WSU kept Northern Colorado from scoring for two minutes while going on an 8-2 run. WSU went 6-6 to end the game and kept the Bears from a field goal for 3:43. WSU couldn't catch back up and fell 69-65.

Leaders: Weber State was led by Daryn Hickok who had 23 points. Hickok led all scorers in the game. Liz Graves rocked a double-double for the second time this season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Ula Chamberlin had four assists. Kayla Watkins had two blocks.

Comparison: Weber State shot 31 percent from the field, 30 percent from the three and 85 percent from the free throw line going 24-28. WSU ended the game with 36 total rebounds, 18 turnovers and nine assists. WSU had 32 points in the paint and 25 off the bench.

Northern Colorado shot 38 percent from the field, 27 percent from the three point line and 81 percent from the line. The Bears ended the night with 40 total rebounds, 13 assists and 21 turnovers. UNC had 22 points in the paint and 24 off the bench and capitalized on 22 points off of turnovers.

Notes to know: Weber State is now 3-17 overall on the season and 1-10 in Big Sky Conference play.
