Wildcats Trounce T-Birds, Remain Unbeaten in Big Sky Play

10/14/2021 7:50:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

The Big Sky Conference buzzsaw that is Weber State Volleyball sliced its way through Cedar City and the campus of Southern Utah University, and won its seventh consecutive match by a score of 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-17).

The first set in Cedar City really set the tone for everything else that would follow. The Wildcat serve once again was a weapon as the 'Cats served up six aces in the first set, three of which belonged to All-American outside hitter Rylin Adams. Dani Nay slugged her way to six kills and Weber State ran away with the first set 25-14.

With five more service aces in the second set, three coming from Nay's right hand, Weber State continued dictate the tempo and direction of play.  The dynamic duo of Adams and Ashlyn Power proceeded to tear the T-Birds apart with their impeccable partnership as Power assisted Adams on five kills in the second stanza. The Wildcats won the set 25-17.

It was a little bit of a grit and grind effort in the third set, but the result was all the same. The Wildcats struggled to gain complete control of things until the middle phases of the third and final set, but they did establish a rhythm with a balanced offensive attack. Power spread the ball all over the court and the Wildcats had five players with multiple kills in the last set, and WSU finished out the sweep over its in-state rival with another 25-17 set victory.

With the win the Wildcats have now won their last 13 sets, 10 of their last 11 matches over SUU, and their last seven matches this season. Weber State remains the Big Sky Conference's only undefeated team.

Offensively, Weber State was on fire and hit .265 as a team. The squad was led by Nay who had 12 kills on .360 hitting, and combined that with four service aces. Adams had 10 kills and three service aces to go along with eight digs. Power was excellent with her distribution of the ball and tallied another 29 assists and served up three aces.

When asked about Power's performance, head coach Jeremiah Larsen mentioned, "That's what we expect her to do. She's supposed to get about 10 assists per set, and she did a good job of running our offense and picking apart their block. That's why we had a high hitting percentage."

Regarding WSU's super star outside hitter, Larsen added, "Dani Nay is being Dani Nay right now. She's seeing the block and she's a really good server, as always. She did a very good job of taking what their block was giving her."

Coming up next on this tough road trip, the Wildcats will make the bus trip to Flagstaff to take on the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks. Weber State's last conference loss was in Flagstaff against the Lumberjacks in the 2020-21 spring season.

"We're going to have play really well against that team," Larsen said of the upcoming NAU match. "It's going to be a tough, tough game. We'll get some rest, go prep and have some fun." The match between Weber State and Northern Arizona will be at 7 PM mountain time, and can be watched on ESPN+.
