Wildcats Spoil NAU's Homecoming, Sweep Lumberjacks

10/16/2021 9:04:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Weber State Volleyball seems as locked in as ever, coming away from the site of its last Big Sky Conference loss with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-19) sweep over Northern Arizona in the Lumberjacks' homecoming match.

The 'jacks established an early lead in the first set, but the Wildcats scratched their way back into the contention. With a 7-1 scoring run, Weber State built a lead that it wouldn't relinquish. Once again it was a balanced offensive attack that helped the 'Cats take the first set in the Rolle Activity Center, and WSU took a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 set victory.

The second set was a phenomenal contest between two of the most talented teams in the Big Sky Conference. There were 11 ties and 4 lead changes throughout the set, but the offense was Weber State's calling card and that's what got them through the second set. With her hitters tallying 20 kills in the set, Ashlyn Power could get the ball to nearly anyone on the court and expect the Wildcats to get a point. The WSU hitters were on fire and carried the 'Cats to a 25-22 set victory, and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Weber State never gave up the lead in the match's third and final set. Power picked apart the Lumberjack block and the Wildcats ran away with the third set 25-19 to win the match.

Power, Weber State's all-time leader in assists and one of the best setters the Big Sky Conference has ever seen, was a maestro leading a beautifully orchestrated offensive attack in Flagstaff. In just three sets, Power had 46 assists and completed her double-double with 15 digs. Her astounding ability to spread the ball all over the floor meant forced the Lumberjack block to freeze, and gave her hitters open looks all night.

But wait, there's more.

The reigning Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week, Dani Nay, was incredible yet again. On 37 swings, Nay had 19 kills and no errors to give her an unfathomable .514 attacking percentage on the day.

Emma Mangum's contributions to this match can't be overlooked. Mangum was dialed in from the right side and gave the 'Cats another 12 kills on 29 attempts and no errors in what was one of her best matches as a Wildcat. Rylin Adams had nine kills and another service ace to add to her season total, and WSU's middle blockers were tremendous in the attack. Sam Schiess and Baylee Bodily had seven kills each, and Bodily led the Wildcats with two aces on the evening.

After another win, WSU improves to 13-5 (8-0), while NAU drops to 7-10 (5-3). The 'Cats have now won 16 consecutive sets, 16 consecutive Big Sky matches, and have won 39 of their last 42 conference matches including tournament play.

Wildcat Volleyball looks to continue its unbelievable, historical stretch of volleyball next week at Swenson Gym with visits from Idaho and Eastern Washington. The Vandals will be in Ogden on Thursday, October 21st at 6:00, and the Eagles will face off against the purple and white on Saturday, October 23rd at 2:00. Tickets to those matches can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500.
