Wildcats Sweep Grizzlies, Remain Undefeated in Conference Play

10/2/2021 4:57:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

With excellent serving from its star players, Weber State Volleyball made it a short day against the Montana Grizzlies in Missoula, and won the match 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 26-24).

The Wildcats established an early lead in the first set at Dahlberg Arena, and had control all the way throughout. Ashlyn Power did an excellent job of spreading the ball around and keeping the Griz defense on its toes, and Weber State closed out the first set with a comfortable 25-20 set victory.

While Jeremiah Larsen's teams are typically known for serving tough, the second set on Saturday was a serving display the likes of which volleyball fans rarely see. In a stunning exhibition of power and placement, Power and Dani Nay combined for eight aces in the second set and kept the Grizzlies offense out of system for nearly the entire stanza. When the 'Cats are serving that well, you can expect to see it manifested in the score line and Weber State ran away with the second set in a blowout, 25-10.

The third set was the closest and best contested of the match on Saturday afternoon. Montana had control for the lion's share of the set and had five-point advantages on multiple occasions throughout the set, but Weber State refused to go away. The Griz used strong defense an efficient offensive attack to build their way to set point and a 24-21 lead, but that's when Larsen's squad turned it up a notch and went to work.

With a kill from Nay serving as a catalyst for the team, Makayla Sorensen serves kept Montana on its back foot and out of system, and the Griz had four consecutive attacking errors to give the 'Cats a five-point run, a 26-24 set victory, and a 3-0 win to end WSU's road trip.

With the victory, the Wildcats' record improved to 9-5 (4-0), and WSU's winning streak improves to four straight matches. Weber State has now won its last six matches against Montana, and eight of the last nine matches in the series.

Offensively, Rylin Adams put on another show and led the team with 13 kills on a .222 attack percentage. Emma Mangum was lights out from the right side as she had one of her best matches of the season with 10 kills on 17 swings. Power collected another 23 assists on the day.

On the other side of things, Weber State's rejuvenated block once again went to work as the 'Cats, highlighted by excellent defensive performances from Baylee Bodily and Sam Schiess, out blocked the Grizzlies by four and a half team blocks.

Weber State will return to Swenson Gym next week for two rivalry matches against Idaho State and Northern Colorado. The Bengals will be in Ogden on Tuesday, October 5th for a match at 6:00. Northern Colorado, the squad that Weber State has played in each of the last two Big Sky Conference championship matches, is in Ogden for a match on Thursday, October 7th at 6:00. Tickets to those matches can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500.
