Stung in "The Nest": Hornets Down Wildcats

10/28/2021 9:56:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Weber State Volleyball's Big Sky Conference west coast road trip got off to a bumpy start on Thursday night, as it lost to Sacramento State by a score of 3-0 (16-25, 21-25, 16-25).

The first set was a dominating one for Sacramento State. The Hornets got out to a lead and they held it throughout the set, keeping Weber State's block on its back foot and opening up the net for their attack, and Sacramento State cruised to a 25-16 set victory on its home court. This was the first set that Weber State had lost in nearly a month, its last set loss coming on September 30th in Bozeman against Montana State.

The following set ended up being much closer and the Wildcats had the lead at various points of the set, but the WSU offense couldn't keep up with the flaming hot Hornet attack. With the 25-21 set victory, Sacramento State had Weber State against the ropes with a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the last set, Weber State had an early lead all the way to 13-11, but Sacramento State turned up the heat and scored on 14 of the next 17 points to sting the Wildcats, close the match out, and continue its string of season changing success.

The loss snaps Weber State's 10-match winning streak this season, its four-match winning streak against Sacramento State, and drops the Wildcats to 10-1 in Big Sky Conference play.

The Wildcat offense was led by Rylin Adams who had 10 kills on the night, followed by Emma Mangum and Sam Schiess who had six each. Ashlyn Power, once again, led the team in assists with 24 over the three-set match.

With Weber State's loss and Portland State (16-7, 10-2) having beat Idaho State on Thursday night, Saturday's clash between the Wildcats and the Vikings has some serious conference implications. The Wildcats are looking to sweep the season series over PSU and stay alone in first place in the Big Sky, while Portland State will be trying to knock WSU off and tie things up atop the conference standings.

That match will be at 8 PM mountain time and there will not be any streaming available for it.
