Dominance.
That's probably the most fitting word to describe the 100th and latest edition in the volleyball rivalry between the Weber State Wildcats and Idaho State Bengals that ended in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-17) sweep in favor of Weber State.
After a tough road trip last week, the Wildcats got back in the win column with the big win over their rivals to the north. The first set saw WSU score runs of three or more points on four separate occasions. Those streaks helped the Wildcats secure a 25-15 wire-to-wire set victory over ISU and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set continued the Wildcats' supremacy. With things tied 4-4 early in the set, Kate Standifird took matters into her own hands at the service line. Behind three of her match-leading four service aces, Weber State went on a seven-point run that helped them establish control and built a lead that Idaho State wouldn't be able to overcome. The Wildcats outscored the Bengals 15-9 over the remainder of the second, won the set 25-13, and took a commanding 2-0 lead in the match in Reed Gym.
Pouncing out to a 4-0 lead in the final set gave the Wildcats the breathing room that they needed in order to cruise to a 25-17 third set victory and get a Big Sky-leading 11th conference win.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 16-7 (11-2), and even up the overall series between the long-time rivals at 50-50 after 100 total matches.
The Wildcats, who entered the nation in third place in the nation in service aces per set, used that serve as a weapon to dictate the match. Standifird led WSU with four aces, Dani Nay, the national leader in service aces, had a couple, and Ashlyn Power added another to give the Wildcats seven for the match.
A crux of Wildcat teams under Jeremiah Larsen has been a big block, and that's what Weber State showed on Wednesday night. Sam Schiess played a role in seven of Weber State's 11 team blocks, compared to just four team blocks for the Bengals.
The Wildcat offense purring against the Bengals and had four ladies with at least five kills. All-American Rylin Adams once again led the charge and tallied 11 kills, Nay had eight as she creeps closer to 1,000 total career kills, Emma Mangum swung on seven kills, and Schiess had tallied five on the night. Power, as always, was phenomenal in her set distribution and dished out another 26 assists.
Defensively the 'Cats were near flawless at every level. Eleven total team blocks and a back row led by Makayla Sorensen and her 16 digs held Idaho State to a -.028 team hitting percentage for the whole match.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Saturday evening against one of the Big Sky's most prominent programs in Northern Colorado. The match will be at 6:00 PM and can be watched on ESPN+ as these two teams battle to solidify their seedings for the upcoming Big Sky Tournament.
