Wildcats Suffer Five-Set Setback in Greeley

11/6/2021 9:01:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

In what has quickly become one of the biggest rivalry matches in Big Sky Conference volleyball, the Weber State Wildcats dropped a match against the Northern Colorado Bears by a score of 3-2 (23-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 7-15).

It was a knock-down, drag-out kind of outing Greeley on Saturday night between two of the conference's top programs. The first set ended up being a microcosm of the match. Plenty of ties and lead changes, but it ended up in favor of the Bears by a slim 25-23 margin.

The Wildcats seemed to find a groove in the following set. With an offense that was flowing and star players that were doing their things, the Wildcats cruised to a smooth 25-15 set victory, and it appeared that Weber State had seized the match's momentum.

After the long break between sets, Northern Colorado came out and fought their way to another close 25-23 set victory and put the Wildcats against the ropes.
WSU wasn't ready to go down without a fight, though. Needing to win the fourth set to stay alive in the match, Weber State took the fourth set after it outhit (.147-.051) and outblocked (4-3) the Bears, and won the set 25-19.

With the match tied at 2-2 heading to the fifth set, volleyball's version of overtime, the Bears couldn't be stopped. In their last home game of the season and a night on which they honored their seniors, the Bears hit a fiery .421 and served in a way that the Wildcats just couldn't keep up. By a tally of 15-7, Northern Colorado wrapped up the match and improved to 11-3 in conference play. Weber State drops to 16-8 overall and now has an 11-3 record in Big Sky Conference action.

With this result and Portland State beating Southern Utah in Cedar City earlier in the evening, there is now a three-way tie atop the Big Sky Conference standings between Weber State, Northern Colorado, and Portland State.

Weber State was led offensively by Dani Nay who had 19 kills, two service aces, and 22.5 points on the evening. Rylin Adams had a tremendous night with 15 kills on .275 hitting, and nine digs. Ashlyn Power had 44 assists for the match. Emma Mangum led the Weber State block and took part in nine blocks, followed by Sam Schiess and Baylee Bodily who each were part of seven blocks. Makayla Sorensen led all players with a phenomenal 23 digs.

The Wildcats return home for their final home regular season matches against Northern Arizona on Thursday and SUU on Saturday for senior night. The Big Sky Conference tournament will also be held in Swenson Gym on November 18th-20th.

Tickets to all home matches can be purchased online or by calling Weber State's ticket office at 801-626-8500.
