Wildcats Power Past New Mexico State 65-63

12/19/2021 4:40:00 AM | Women's Basketball

On Saturday afternoon, the Weber State Wildcats advanced to 4-0 at the Dee Events Center by powering past the New Mexico State Aggies 65-63.

This season has been a continuous effort to show that times have changed in Ogden and the 'Cats once again went out and showed that by battling through early adversity. In the opening minutes, WSU found themselves trailing by as much as 8 but eventually battled back and ended the quarter down 14-12. Their spurt to end the quarter was not only impressive but pivotal as they used that momentum in the second quarter as well.

While WSU's lead was only 29-28 at the end of the opening half, it felt bigger than that - because they had taken the Aggie's best shot, stood tall then were in control for the remainder of the half. Still, though, it was clear that if that the second half would be a grind and it certainly was. This game was not only physical but also chippy and a large reason for that can be credited to the onslaught of attempts from the paint from both teams. Due to the constant drives and post-ups, the WSU and NMSU combined for only four made threes; Emma Torbert made half of them while the Aggies hit the other two.

While the physicality from the Wildcats on the offensive end was welcomed, that same approach from the Aggies meant that there were a few Wildcats in foul trouble which led to meaningful minutes for both Tamali'i Fonoti who provided a spark in the opening half, and Charlotte Hegvold who was patient against a full-court press in the closing minutes of the third quarter and helped get the 'Cats a bucket. Whether it was the sparks from Fonoti and Hegvold or the big outing for Kori Pentzer, it took everyone to secure the win.

Pentzer, who was just one day removed from becoming a college graduate, had an afternoon that consisted of 18 points in 37 minutes which included an and-one finish with 2:05 left in the game to put the 'Cats up 65-59. WSU also received key contributions from Jadyn Matthews who had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Emma Torbert who finished with 10 points and 8 boards, and Daryn Hickok as she pulled down 6 rebounds and added 5 points.

The (5-5, 1-1) Wildcats had to fight, but when the dust settled they had silenced the New Mexico State Aggies 65-63 and kept their home streak alive. WSU had four games left on their home stretch and they'll look to keep the good times rolling on Tuesday, Dec. 21 against Pacific at 5 P.M. at the Dee on ESPN+.
