OGDEN - Weber State rallied from a big first half deficit and picked up its first win of the season with a 79-73 win over Sacramento State Thursday evening at the Dee Events Center.
The Hornets led by as many as 16 points midway through the second quarter and held a 43-31 lead at halftime.
But the Wildcats fought back with a huge third quarter. WSU outscored Sacramento State 26-11 in the third quarter and took a three-point lead at the break.
The 'Cats held off the Hornets with clutch shots and key free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
Five Wildcats scored in double figures led by Daryn Hickok who scored a season-high 25 points. She was 9 of 13 from the field and a perfect 6 of 6 from the free throw line. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Ashley Thoms scored a career-high 14 points off the bench. Jadyn Matthews added 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Kori Pentzer also had 11 points, as did Emma Torbert who knocked down two 3-pointers, grabbed eight rebounds and had four blocked shots.
Weber State shot 43 percent from the field and held the Hornets to 35 percent shooting. Sacramento State was 12 of 34 from 3-point range and the Wildcats outrebounded the Hornets 38-30.
"I'm just so happy for the kids to finally get one," said WSU head coach Velaida Harris. "They dug in and played tough defense and that was the key.. I'm so proud of them for their effort and not giving up."
The same two teams will meet again on Saturday at 12 p.m. at the Dee Events Center, in the final home game of the season for the Wildcats.
