WSU Wins One of Two Again at Dixie State

ST. GEORGE, Utah – For the second-straight day, Weber State won the opener of a doubleheader against Dixie State only to drop the second game to earn a split at Karl Brooks Field. On Saturday, the Wildcats kicked off the day with an 11-6 win ahead of a 9-1 loss and head home with a split of four games on the weekend to move to 9-11 on the year.
Faith Hoe fired up the Wildcat offense in the second inning of game one, taking a 2-0 pitch from Brianna Castellon over the left field fence for a two-run opposite field home run. Mariah Ramirez followed Hoe with a home run of her own to left, her third of the series, as the Wildcats went back-to-back to take a 3-0 lead. Chloe Camarero later added an RBI single to cap off the inning, a five-run frame for Weber State.
Dixie State rallied in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs of their own to knot the game at five runs apiece. Mikaela Thomson provided the big blow in the inning with a one-out grand slam.
The Wildcats added four runs in the fifth inning with Makayla Donahoo and Mia Rushton providing RBI singles and WSU took the lead for good at 9-5.
Dixie State cut the lead to 9-6 on a Meagan Anders homer in the sixth inning, but Rushton added another two runs batted in on a seventh inning triple to put the game away.
Ramirez earned the win for Weber State despite giving up six runs over five innings of work, and improved her record to 6-4 on the season.
In the second game, the Trailblazers ran away in the first inning, scoring six times in the frame. The Wildcats managed a lone run as Katelyn Whiting drove home Rushton on a single in the third inning, but Dixie State added another two runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to end the game.
Carissa Burgess went the distance for Dixie State to earn the win, while Kate Donaldson suffered the loss for Weber State to drop to 3-3 on the year.
Rushton, Camarero and Donahoo each recorded three hits to lead Weber State on the day, while Rushton's three RBI topped the team.
Weber State will open up its home schedule next week, as they host Utah State for a single game on Tuesday, March 23 before the Big Sky season opens with a three-game series Friday and Saturday against Idaho State in Ogden.
