LAS VEGAS, NV - The Wildcats competed well at the UNLV Spring Invitational in sunny Las Vegas from March 18th-20th. Weber State had many great individual performances, which led to the Wildcats' first place team finish.
"I'm not sure why I didn't realize it before, but as we were driving home from the meet it hit me that this was our first outdoor track meet in nearly 2 years," said head coach, Corbin Talley. "For a lot of the guys on the team, this was their first college outdoor track meet. It's incredible to think about everything that's happened in the past year. We're grateful to be out there again, and the real focus this weekend was competing with the right mindset--being grateful for our opportunities, and really giving our best efforts. The conditions were a bit rough, particularly in the 20 mph winds, but we saw a lot of focus and teamwork from our athletes."
Day 1 & 2
Jed Smith performed well in the decathlon, earning 6,441 points to place third. He ran a 12.13 in the 100 meters, 6.16m in the long jump, 11.69m in the shot put, 52.27 in the 400 meters, 16.22 in the 110m hurdles, 30.69m in the discus, 4.65m in the pole vault, 49.42m in the javelin, and 4:51.67 in the 1500 meters. Xakai Harry earned 6,421 points to place fifth for the Wildcats. He ran a 10.93 in the 100 meters, 7.23m in the long jump, 11.09m in the shot put, 1.93m in the high jump,51.91 in the 400m, 15.91 in the 110m hurdles, 29.66m in the discus, 3.55m in the pole vault, 35.43m in the javelin, and 4:58.39 in the 1500 meters. Jakob Pearson earned eighth place with 5,623 points, and Caleb Whitney earned ninth with 4,804 points.
"It's not too often that track meets during the season are scored, but it was a lot of fun for the guys to get the team victory as well--even if some of the teams weren't full squads."
Day 3
In the 5,000 meters, Christian Allen took first place with a time of 14:32.92. Austin Byrer finished fourth at 14:57.92; Jacob Stone finished fifth at 15:01.61; Logan Anderson finished sixth at 15:01.87; Krey Ramsey came in seventh at 15:03.10; and Kayden Harmon finished 12th with a time of 15:28. 26. Bronson Winter finished first in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:01.51 to give the Wildcats 10 more points. Tracen Warnick finished fourth with a time of 4:01.83.
In the men's 110m hurdles, Cyrus Rindlisbacher finished sixth with a time of 14.74, and Caleb Whitney finished seventh with a time of 14.76.

"I'm very excited about the freshman record in the 5000m from Christian Allen. He's bound to drop that time quite a bit over the season. I'm also excited about the huge PR from Cody Canard in the javelin. It's a 32 foot PR and I think the #6 All-Time from Weber State, and currently ranked 25th in the NCAA."
Matt Masias competed well in the 800 meters, earning second place with a time of 1:54.04. Tracen Warnick finished eighth with a time of 1:59.75, and Bryce Anderson finished in ninth with a time of 2:00.00.

The Wildcats finished second in the 4x400m relay, coming in at 3:19.05. The team was made up of Tillett, Wheeler, Masias, and Rindlisbacher.
Xakai Harry competed well in the men's long jump, earning fifth with a 7.18 mark. Johnie Talamantes earned eighth with a mark of 6.71.
In the men's pole vault, Lachlan Burns finished second with a mark of 4.80m. Jed Smith finished fourth with a 4.65m mark. Anthony Garcia earned fifth place in the high jump, with a 1.95m mark.
"Another impressive all-time mark was Lachlan Burns in the pole vault. Lachy did a great job competing in the difficult wind. Bronson came through big for us with victories in both the 1500 meters and steeplechase. Isaac dropped some great early season times in the 100m and the 200m, and our 4x400m team of Isaac, Matt, Jed, and Cyrus ended the meet very strong for us. Honestly, we're a pretty young team, and it was great to see many of our young guys getting after it: Matt Masias in the 800, Alex Wheeler in the 100 and 200, Jed Smith in the Decathlon, Logan Anderson in the 5000, and a number of other performances," said Talley.
The 'Cats will compete next at the UVU Invitational on April 2nd and 3rd in Orem, Utah.
"Overall, the marks weren't fully indicative of the strong efforts we saw today--at least in the events that had a battle to headwind. So coming off this meet, I'm excited to see what we can do as we get some better conditions and a little more experience."
