Weber State men finish fourth at Big Sky Championships

The Weber State men's track and field team finished fourth at the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, held at the Chick Hislop Track at Stewart Stadium.

WSU totaled 105 points, to finish one point behind Idaho for third place. Northern Arizona won the title with 168 points and Montana State was second with 122.

For the week the Wildcats claimed four conference titles.

On Saturday, Bronson Winter rallied down the stretch to win the conference crown in the 800 meters, finishing with a time of 1:50.99.

In other action on Saturday, Alex Wheeler took fifth place in the 200 meters with a time of 21.48.

WSU was fifth in the 400 meter relay at 41.63 and was fifth in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:15.72.

Caleb Whitney finished eighth in the 400 meter hurdles at 53.87 and Dallin Leatham was eighth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:50.41.

In the field events, Trey Deveraux came in sixth in the high jump with a mark of 6-07 and Anthony Garcia was tied for seventh at 6-05.

Friday
In Friday's action Weber State won two events and set a school record.

Xakai Harry took home gold in the long jump and set a new Weber State school record. He posted a jump of 25-06 to become the first Wildcat since 2013 to win the conference title in the long jump. He also broke Hall of Famer Wiley King's school record in the event. Trey Deveraux was eighth in the long jump at 23-04.75.

Lachlan Burns won first place in the men's pole vault. He posted a career best mark of 17-02.75, which now ranks as the second best in Weber State history. Ryan Sherman finished third in the event at 15-07.25 and Jed Smith was fourth at 15-01.50.

In the running events, Bronson Winter finished second overall in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 8:57.38. Tracen Warnick was sixth at 9:21.85.

Christian Allen finished fourth in the 10,000 meters at 30:23.06 with Dallin Leatham right behind at 30:24.75 for fifth place.

Cody Canard also finished fifth in the javelin with a mark of 206-01.

Decathlon
On Thursday, Caleb Whitney claimed the Big Sky title in the decathlon with 7,061 points, the fourth highest total in Weber State history. He became just the third Wildcat to ever win the Decathlon and the first since WSU Hall of Famer Bill Schuffenhaur in 1994.

The Wildcats finished first, second and sixth in the event to total 21 points. Jed Smith was second with 6,715 points, the 10th most in WSU history, and Jakob Person finished sixth with 6,066 points.

Up next for those that qualify will be the NCAA West Region Championship, May 27-29 in College Station, Texas.
