Wildcats Down Hornets, Stay Undefeated in Big Sky Play

9/25/2021 4:46:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Weber State Volleyball had a wonderful opening weekend of Big Sky Conference play with two matches and two victories, the most recent coming against Sacramento State, with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-23) final score. The win gives Wildcat Volleyball its 21st consecutive win at Swenson Gym, a place where Weber State hasn't lost in 714 days.

The Wildcat stars were shining bright for this Saturday match up between Big Sky Conference foes. All-American outside hitter Rylin Adams put on an absolute show for the fans who came to Swenson Gym. 23 kills, 12 digs, two service aces, and a blistering .309 attack percentage were her final numbers. Outside hitter Dani Nay had eight kills, 14 digs, and added to her conference leading service aces total with another five for the match.

There was also a phenomenal performance from freshman middle blocker Baylee Bodily, who tallied seven kills on ten swings, and helped shore up the middle of WSU's defense with six block assists.

After losing 23-25 in the first set, a set that saw 12 ties, the Wildcats seemed to awaken and came out with an enormous response in the second set. Five of the team's ten service aces came in the second, including two from Nay, and WSU ran away with a 25-10 set victory.

The third set saw the 'Cats establish a lead early on and hold it throughout. Weber State was anchored by seven kills from Adams and two more aces from Nay, to give WSU a 25-16 set win.

With Sacramento State fighting to extend the match, the fourth set was destined to be a close one. With nine tie scores and four lead changes, both teams were clawing to gain control of the set, but it was the Wildcats, propelled by 14 amazing assists from senior Ashlyn Power, who found a way to win the set 25-23, and the match. With the win, Weber State improves to 7-5 (2-0) on the season, and the loss puts Sacramento State at 5-7 (0-2).

When asked about Adams' tremendous offensive performance, head coach Jeremiah Larsen said, "What can you say? 23 kills. I thought she was the backbone of our serve-receive and she was the backbone of our offense today."

It was another incredible outing from the service line for Weber State who out served the Hornets ten service aces to two. Regarding the team's impeccable serving, Larsen noted, "I thought we did a nice job of hitting areas instead of hitting people. And sometimes when we start getting in lulls in a game, we start hitting people instead of areas and that can cause us problems."

When Bodily's impact on the match was mentioned, Larsen said, "(Her) performance today is a good example of how deep we are as a volleyball team. It's not always about Rylin, Dani, Ash, and Sam (Schiess). We have other players on this team that can really contribute when needed."

Weber State will be away next week and make its way north to Montana. The Wildcats face off against Montana State on Thursday, September 30th at 7:00, and a match against the Montana Grizzlies on Saturday, October 2nd at 2:00. All Big Sky Conference matches can be watched on ESPN+.

Two massive rivalry matches will take place in Swenson Gym when the Wildcats return home. On Tuesday, October 5th, WSU hosts Idaho State at 6:00, and then Weber State will play Northern Colorado on Thursday, October 7th. Tickets to all home matches can be purchased online or by calling the Weber State ticket office at 801-626-8500.
