Wildcats Dominate Dixie State, Close BYU Invitational In Style
9/4/2021 6:21:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
Weber State Volleyball closed out the BYU Invitational in style on Saturday afternoon by beating the Dixie State Trailblazers by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-18). With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 4-2 on the season while the Trailblazers drop to 0-6.
It was a rough first set for WSU who couldn't quite seem to find its rhythm. Weber State had tied things up at 16-16, but DSU went on a three-point run that gave them the separation necessary to control the first, winning the set 25-23.
The second set was a different story.
The Trailblazers actually had a large lead early on at 5-1, but a relentless Wildcat serve and attack reminded Wildcat nation of what this team is capable of, and went on a 24-7 run to finish out the second and knot things up after two sets.
The third set, while being significantly closer than its predecessor, was one that Weber State controlled for the most part. DSU had tied things up at 17, but after  Jeremiah Larsen called timeout, outside hitter Dani Nay smashed a kill and the Trailblazers had two consecutive attacking errors to give WSU a 20-17 advantage. The Wildcats wouldn't look back from there and went on to a 25-22 set victory.
In what proved to be the final set, the 'Cats completely dominated things and had a lead as large as 19-8 at one point. The Trailblazers rallied but it would be too little too late, and WSU finished things out in four with a 25-18 tally.
Nay led all players with 17 kills and collected 14 digs for another double-double, while senior outside hitter Rylin Adams had smacked 14 kills and led the Wildcats with 22 digs. Senior setter Ashlyn Power put on a show with 43 assists and 17 digs, as Weber State led the match in every major category.
The Wildcats return home on Wednesday, September 8th at 6:00 against the defending WAC champion Utah Valley Wolverines. Weber State will honor the 2021 spring season Big Sky Championship team prior to the game with a ring and banner ceremony. UVU will also be honored for their 2021 spring season conference championship. Tickets to the match can be purchased online or by calling the WSU ticket office at 801-626-8500.
