• Another week and another instate road game for Weber State football. After opening the season at No. 24 Utah, the Wildcats are back on the road at Dixie State Saturday night for the first game ever in St. George. The 10th ranked Wildcats and Trailblazers will kickoff at 8 p.m. Saturday night from Greater Zion Stadium in St. George. The game will be streamed online on ESPN+ and the ESPN app with radio coverage on 103.1 FM "The Wave". Live stats at WeberStateSports.com.
Wildcats drop season opener 40-17 at No. 24 Utah
Weber State opened the 2021 season with a 40-17 loss at No. 24 Utah on Thursday night in the newly renovated Rice-Eccles Stadium. The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-3 lead after a 100-yard kickoff return by Rashid Shaheed. The game was then delayed for 90 minutes to due lightning in the area. Utah had 450 yards of total offense, compared to 270 for the Wildcats, but WSU had just 57 yards rushing. Weber State also committed 11 penalties for 98 yards.
Wildcats ranked 10th in nation in latest polls
After the opening week, the Wildcats are ranked 10th in the nation in the latest Stats Perform poll and the AFCA Coaches poll. A total of five Big Sky teams are ranked in this week's poll, with all five in the top 14. Weber State was sixth in the preseason poll, the fourth straight season the 'Cats have been ranked in the top 10 in the preseason polls. Weber State has been in the top 10 in the nation for 35 straight polls, dating back to October 2018.
During the spring season, Weber State was as high as second in the national polls, the highest ranking in school history.
Rashid Shaheed makes history with another 100-yard kickoff return
Weber State senior Rashid Shaheed made history in the season opener as he set a Big Sky record and tied an FCS record with his sixth career kickoff return for a touchdown.
Shaheed returned a kickoff 100 yards with 8:26 to play in the first quarter that gave Weber State a 7-3 lead. It was his sixth career kickoff return for a touchdown, now tied for the FCS all-time record. It was also his fourth career 100-yard return.
He finished the game with four kickoff returns for 148 yards, which is the 12th most return yards in a game in WSU history.
Shaheed, a three-time All-American, has a career kickoff return average of 29.7 yards per return. Among active players, that is the current career leader in kickoff return average for all of Division I football. He is currently sixth in Weber State history in career all-purpose yards with 4,143 yards.
