Torbert scores 29 and 'Cats snap skid
Ogden, UT - Emma Torbert scored a career-high 29 points on Saturday afternoon against the Sacramento State Hornets as the Wildcat basketball team snapped a 6-game losing streak, defeating the Hornets 79-76 and moved to 4-7 in the Big Sky (8-12 overall).
How it happened:
The Wildcats started the game strong behind Torbert's 12 first quarter points. In a quarter that saw both teams in front early on, nine straight points by the Wildcats in the middle of the quarter propelled the 'Cats to a lead that they would not relinquish until under four minutes to go in the game. After falling behind late, the 'Cats rallied, and Torbert's 3-pointer with 19 seconds to go gave them a lead that they would not lose. Leading by three with four seconds to go, Coach Valeida Harris chose to foul the Hornets instead of allowing a 3-point attempt, and the 'Cats hung on for the much-needed win.
Numbers to know:
Torbert led the team with her career-high 29 points, but each player contributed. Daryn Hickok had two offensive rebounds in the pivotal 3rd quarter which lead to five points. Kori Pentzer's four points late in the game kept the 'Cats within striking distance. Aloma Solovi ran the offense efficiently and ended the game with six points, four assists and two steals. This was the game that showed the true potential of Coach Harris' team. The Wildcats five starters all logged 30+ minutes, which did lead to some tired legs down the stretch, but the 'Cats had just enough in the tank to pull this one out.Â
Next up:
The 'Cats head to Montana hoping to build on the momentum found in this game. They play the Montana Grizzlies Thursday, Feb 3 and the Montana State Bobcats Saturday, Feb 5.Â
