Cats Keep Rolling, Sweep Hornets Out of Ogden

10/13/2022 7:43:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

OGDEN, Utah – With the top three teams in the Big Sky Conference playing in Ogden this weekend, the Wildcats opened things up with an enormous 3-0 (25-19, 25-22, 25-19) win over the Sacramento State Hornets on Thursday evening.

The Hornets, who were tied for first place in the Big Sky coming in to the evening, held an 8-7 in the first set when a Makayla Sorensen kill from the left side seemed to kick the Wildcat offense into gear and the Cats scored on the next seven rallies to take a commanding 15-8 lead. The two sides went back and forth following WSU's eight-point run, but Weber State held off Hornets and nabbed the first set by a score of 25-19.

Sacramento State held the lead early on in the second set at 14-11, but the Wildcats scored on six of the next seven points to regain the advantage at 17-15. Later in the set the Hornets appeared poised to steal the set and tie the match up at 1-1, but WSU put its foot on the pedal and scored on six of the set's final eight points, highlighted by a big kill from Emma Mangum on the right pin.

The match clinching set was a phenomenal wire-to-wire effort in which the Wildcats never trailed or tied the Hornets. A humongous, white-clad crowd reached a fever pitch when Mangum sprawled to the deck to dig out the ball, and sent a free ball over for a kill in the Sacramento State campfire to take an 18-14 advantage and forcing the Hornets to call timeout. The combination of a near-flawless block and excellent swings from Mangum and Dani Richins on the pins, Weber State cruised to a 25-19 victory to take the match 3-0 in front of a raucous crowd in Club Swenson.

Weber State (11-6, 5-1) has now won five consecutive matches – the longest such streak in the conference - and leads the Big Sky Conference in overall win percentage.

QUOTABLES

"Sacramento State is really a good volleyball team. We just kind of hung in there and our defense did a really nice job. They did a nice job on us defensively and we went toe-to-toe with them for a little bit. That's what Sacramento State does. That's a huge win for us because of the level in which they were playing and the level of team that they are. […] That was a huge crowd and for sure our kids got a huge uplift. The energy that comes from out crowd is something that you can't quantify in stats, but we appreciate everyone who comes out and watches our matches." – Jeremiah Larsen

"We're feeling good. We just want to keep this energy and keep the intensity and the focus up so that we can go into the Portland State match the same way and continue on this grind. We feel good about it. […] The crowd was awesome. We're so glad that we had people come in. They helped us out a lot and brought the energy out on the court, it was great." – Emma Mangum
