OGDEN, Utah – The Weber State Wildcat five-match winning streak came to an end on Saturday evening as the Portland State Vikings left Swenson Gym with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-22) victory.
It just wasn't the Wildcats' night from the start. The Vikings took a 2-1 lead in the first set and didn't trail until the third set. Despite the Wildcats hitting .333 as a team in the opening frame, PSU couldn't be stopped on the night and it was smooth sailing for the Vikings as the nabbed the opening set 25-15.
There was more of the same for both teams in the second set. WSU tallied nine kills and four blocks as a team in the second set, but the red-hot Vikings were able to find the floor and kept scoring at a high rate. PSU took a commanding 2-0 match lead into the third set.
The Wildcats were extremely competitive in the third and held the lead for large portions of the set, including a lead as large as 10-7, but the first-place Vikings came storming back behind one of the Big Sky Conference's most potent attacks. The two teams exchanged jabs at each other and traded leads, ties, and points throughout the remainder of the match, but it was ultimately PSU that scored three of the last four points in the match to take the win in Ogden.
The loss puts Weber State at 11-7 (5-2) on the season.
