Wildcats Get Back on Track, Sweep Grizzlies

MISSOULA, Mont. – Weber State volleyball righted the proverbial ship on Thursday evening with a big 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 26-24) win over the Montana Grizzlies.
After a rare loss at home in Swenson Gym last Saturday, Wildcat Nation was eager to see how Jeremiah Larsen and his squad would respond to the adversity.
The answer: Emphatically.
After scoring four straight points to take a 15-8 lead in the opening set, the Griz appeared poised to carry the first set on their home floor, the Wildcats had other plans, however. A balanced offensive attack helped Weber State go on a 17-6 run to finish out the opening set and the 'Cats started the match with a 1-0 lead.
A pair of early kills from Brielle Rueckert and another couple from Kate Standifird saw WSU leap to a 7-3 lead in what proved to a more wide open second set. The Griz did see a five-point swing go in their favor to cut the deficit a single point, but they weren't ever able to get over that plateau despite hanging close for portions of the set. The score sat at 18-17 before Weber State kicked into gear and closed out the set in style. Four kills from Dani Richins served as the catalyst for a 7-2 run that closed out the set and gave Weber State a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The majority of the final set felt like either team could win it. A Montana attacking error gave the Wildcats a one-point advantage at the media timeout, and neither team really seized control until the final points of the set. Baylee Bodily, in one of her most dominating stretches in a match in her career, had a kill followed by back-to-back service aces that gave the 'Cats a three-point edge at 21-18, but Montana fought all the way back to have set point at 24-23. The Wildcats retaliated with an Emma Mangum kill, a Charli Bouquet ace (how is she always serving when the match is on the line?), and another kill from Mangum to finish up the set, and the match.
The win puts Weber State at 12-7 (6-2) on the season, Montana falls to 11-9 (4-4) for the year.
NOTABLES
-Weber State has now won eight consecutive matches over Montana. The Wildcats haven't lost in Missoula since 2013.
-Richins' 12 kills put her over the 200-kill mark for the season as she continues her climb up the Weber State volleyball record books.
-Bouquet tied her career high with 18 digs for the match.
-Bodily's amazing season continues as she crushed seven kills while hitting .467.
-Jeremiah Larsen's teams are now 10-1 against Montana during his tenure.
