Business Trip in Bozeman: Wildcats Handle Bobcats With 3-1 Victory

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Behind a flawless block, the Weber State Wildcat volleyball team continued its hot streak on Saturday by defeating the Montana State Bobcats 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-16, 25-17).
With the opening set tied at 11 points each, a Brielle Rueckert kill and a Dani Richins ace highlighted a four-point run that gave the Wildcats the separation they needed to control the rest of the set. The two sides swapped points throughout the remainder of the frame, but WSU's four point advantage stayed intact and the Wildcats took the first set.
The roles were reversed in the following set, however. It was Montana State that got out to a lead and used a four-point run to extend its advantage to 15-12 halfway through the second. Shortly thereafter it was the Wildcats who countered with another four-point stretch, culminating in an Emma Mangum ace, to give Weber State a 17-16 lead. The lead exchanged hands several time for the remainder of the set, and a Mangum kill gave the Wildcats a set point at 24-23, but MSU came back with a trio of points to close out the second and tie the match.
The drama was effectively over after that as the Wildcats played with a fire in their eyes and ran away with the third and fourth sets.
In a wire-to-wire third set, the Wildcats got out to a 6-1 lead which included an impressive service ace from Makayla Sorensen, and Weber State didn't look back from there. MSU did cut the lead to a single point at 13-12, but the Wildcats scored the next six points to give them an insurmountable lead. With the score at 24-16, Mangum tallied one of her team-leading 11 kills to give Weber State a 2-1 lead in the match.
Montana State held early leads in the match's final set, its last lead coming at 7-6, but the Wildcats took eight of the next 11 scores to seize control of the fourth. Weber State's block made the trip to Bozeman as the Bobcats just couldn't get anything back over the net, and WSU cruised to a 25-17 set victory to close out the match and sweep their annual road trip to Montana.
Weber State (13-7, 7-2) continues its hot stretch of play and will return home for a single match on Friday, October 28 against the Idaho State Bengals.
